Fall 2020 Application Open!

@Das1234 so sorry, that’s a miss on our end. I am working on getting it added to that page, thank you for bringing it to my attention. That GPA is 3.75 – 4.34.

@cypresspat
Tell him at least it’s not Cincinnati (I’m from Pittsburgh but lived in Cinci for a while. Nice city). Also tell him at least he could go home to watch Browns games and the possibility to see the Browns once a year. Not so much if he goes somewhere else.

@chmcnm Excellent points. Pittsburgh is only 2 hours. And it does have the Penguins. There are pluses. But the Steelers. Within a few miles. This is a hard sell. Workin on it.

Just submitted my application 1 hour ago! How does the decision process work, if anybody knows?

Hi @lclamon,
After you submit your application, it will take 2-3 business days for us to receive your application data. Once we receive that data, we will send you a confirmation email. It typically takes about 4-6 weeks to hear from us with a decision. If you have any questions along the way you can reach out to your Enrollment Services Manager: https://oafa.pitt.edu/esm_directory.php
Good luck!

@hailtopitt1787 Thank you so much for being here to answer our questions.

Pitt takes demonstrated interest into account when considering merit awards, correct? My S visited campus last falll, with an official tour and a few info sessions. Is that information somehow attached to his file when his application is under review, or does he need to work it into his essays?

Hi @ShrimpBurrito

We do take demonstrated interest into account when making admissions decisions and awarding merit scholarships. However, these awards are still reviewed holistically with grades, extracurricular activities, short answers, and demonstrated interest. The system does automatically tie his visit to his application so it’s not necessary for him to note it on his essays.
Good luck!

Awesome, thanks! H2P.

My daughter hates football but still loved her time at Pitt. She got her degree in industrial engineering. Honestly, if he’s like her he’ll be studying A LOT so football will
wait. Her friends would be going to games (all kinds) and she’d be studying. The major weeds out so many the first year (semester!) that he needs to focus on that. The four years will fly by. If he has any questions about the engineering program I’m sure she’d be happy to answer them. My son is applying now but not for engineering. Good luck to your son, wherever he ends up.

D is applying to CBA. She isn’t sure yet exactly what she wants to study, but thinks Finance and/or Marketing. Is there a benefit to naming her intended course of study on the application, or should she choose Business - Undecided? Also, are SAT results required to be reported on the application, since they must be sent directly by the College Board anyway?

Hi @Yocco1,
I think going in undecided is okay but it’s also okay if she chooses a major and changes it later, the first few courses will all be gen eds for the most part. As far as the SAT scores go, we recommend that you enter the date that the student took the test so our admissions committee knows when to expect it.
Good luck!

@hailtopitt1787 thanks in advance for your time.
Can you kindly confirm the following for the common app:

  1. no personal statement required - only the short answer prompts
  2. no recommendation letters required
    Thank you

Hi @brown2024,

  1. No, we do not review your personal statement from the common app, just your short answer questions.
  2. We do not require recommendation letters.
    Good luck!

@hailtopitt1787
Thanks very much!

I have a 2.8 GPA and 1330 Sat. I am going to my senior year and applying to Pitt main campus in September. I took 3 honors and 2 academic courses in 9th grade. In 10th grade, I took 3 honors, 1 ap course, and 2 academic courses. And in 11th grade, I took mostly all academic courses, 1 ap course, and 1 honors course. In 12th grade, I’m taking mostly all academic courses, 1 honor course and a lot of business classes. I am thinking to go undecided to Pitt and going to choose to do the summer start to increase my chances. I have 200 plus volunteer hours. I started my own clothing brand. I am not going to apply for any financial aid. Pitt is my first choice and I am a Pitt resident. I love Pitt university and I just recently went to Pit’s blue and gold day. Can I do anything to help my chances? And also do I have a chance to get into Pitt?

Hello,
My DS applied to Pitt and received his email a week ago but when he tries to check his application status on the Pitt portal, it comes back with a blank page. Also, when he searched for application status on AskCathy, it says - SAT initiated even though he sent the scores a few days ago via CollegeBoard. Is he missing something?

Thank you

@hailtopitt1787 quick question. I see on the Common App that the Pitt short answer essay questions each have a maximum word count of 750 words (that is what is listed under the space to add your essay on the Common App). However, online on the Pitt website, I have seen the language that “However, the most effective responses typically range from 200-300 words per question. Responses that are longer or shorter are acceptable.” Can you please confirm what the word count should be for the Pitt short answer questions. Many thanks!

Thanks to @hailtopitt1787 for answering these questions…much appreciated!

Question for you: I saw in the Class of 2023 thread here that applicants who applied via the Common Application took longer to receive a decision than those who applied via Pitt’s online application directly. Is this still the case? Or are the process/review times the same now vs last year independent of how the application is submitted?

Thank you!

Hi @projectmgr
Last year was the first year that we accepted the Common App so it was a new process for our department but I believe this year the review times should be fairly equal. There are times where we get an influx of application (especially before our scholarship deadline) which could increase wait times but for the most part, applicants will hear within 4-6 weeks.
Good luck!

Hey @NewPoster123,
There is no word count for our short answer questions but they are ‘short answer questions’ for a reason. Keep in mind that the Admissions Committee reviews responses for quality rather than length so don’t worry too much about the word count but instead on the message you are conveying.
Good luck!
