Fall 2020 Yale Transfer Thread

@malkovsky definitely. I still haven’t submitted my standout. I wonder if the person who got the interview has already.

@cusnew dunno what’s going on, but I received an interview invite despite not submitting a standout (and with no intentions to do so either). I’m suspicious about if the interviews truly mean anything though as I actually submitted a pretty apathetic application and didn’t even follow up with activating the portal account until today…

@strawbrryale do you mind if i ask what you were applying to and your stats? You got a request for a live interview right? that’s extremely impressive!

im surprised yale is sending out stuff on a saturday… o.o @strawbrryale

@strawbrryale & @veggiewok

Could you be a lamb and provide your stats and ECs? It’s clear you both have stood out to the Yale admissions panel. Plus we’re all bored, stressed out, and nervous and would greatly appreciate this information.
But don’t feel pressured to if you don’t want to! :smile:

Agreed. It would help a lot @LapisLazumarril

Also, if you guys don’t mind sharing, who was the email from?

I’m anxious, does not getting a live interview pretty much equals to a pre-notified rejection? (since Y only accepts 20-30 people, and if two on this thread already got interview, then it’s not hard to imagine they already send off dozens of live interviews across the globe…)

lmao I have basically given up on my application to Yale.

The email sent on friday was just from the admissions office. to be honest, I’m not putting too much stock on an interview invite. the live interview may just be a spectacle of some sort after the preliminary review, especially since not all applications are complete amidst this pandemic chaos. I do wish I could offer my interview slot to someone else, who probably put more time and thought into their application than I did in the one and half weeks I had to pull together a last-minute application lol.

trying to be careful about revealing info, but if it helps, my GPA is 3.81 and my SAT was 1520. EC-wise, I was part of an ambitious student-faculty project following departmentalization of a struggling program but it failed and collapsed so badly, I didn’t even discuss much about it. I also didn’t document any other significant ECS/achievements/leadership work aside from an art portfolio. I was recently accepted into a 2-year scholars program to conduct my own research but again, not documented on the app. I mostly wrote about my aspirations to do research and go to grad school. Lots of namedropping of prominent professors whom I wanted to study under, but also multiple typos and suspicious blanks about myself. I don’t think not receiving live interview indicates a rejection, and I don’t think I am particularly a strong candidate among a cohort of brilliant and determined students who definitely want an acceptance to yale more than I do. i do hope the best for everyone though!

from what i could tell there were no more than 40 interview slots-- but they could definitely be sending out more, and I wouldn’t at all discount your application if you didn’t get an interview. There’s truly no way to know what all this means. My app was pretty meticulous. My stats were 4.0 at a top 4 year. I’m a little nervous (probably for no reason) to reveal too many details about my app (if you want more specifics for ECs or questions you can definitely message me), but I have held many different prominent internships (Senate etc.) on top of 3 extracurriculars and 2 leadership roles at my college. In high school my strengths were my extracurriculars and I had similar stats (captain of debate, and president of 2 other organizations). I have also been pursuing a professional creative career, and much of my app revolved around that.

Getting a live interview is a really good sign and past transfers can attest to that. All that were accepted had an interview. The thing that’s confusing is the standout interview for this year.

@cusnew not true. If you look at ‘18 and 17’ threads, some were admitted w/o interview. They even discussed the same thing, to see if not getting an interview is an automatic rejection—it’s not.

Also, if anyone’s portal changes (missing turned to received) or if they hear back from Yale regarding this issue many are facing, please update us all on this forum.

I don’t think anyone should give up hope on an interview just yet. I’d suspect not all AO work at the same pace. Regional AO might send requests before others (my thinking).

@worksmart65 I’m sorry but that’s what I heard from two people at Yale and they transferred there. He literally told me if you didn’t get the interview it’s not a good sign. All the transfers there got an interview. Also, this year is really different because of the situation we’re all facing so who knows what could happen, but again take what I say with a grain of salt. I mean, I didn’t get an interview, so there’s that.

@cusnew oh got it. Yeah I just referenced older threads to give us all hope lol :wink:

Do you have any missing material in your portal?

I don’t have anything missing @worksmart65 I still need to do the standout interview. I’m hoping I can do it today.

@cusnew All the best!

@worksmart65 Thank you!

I did the interview. For those who have done it, did you receive a confirmation email that your interview was submitted? On the website it just says it was applied.

@cusnew - i did mine literally the day after and i had trouble cuz it bounced me to an error page. i had to call help desk and they said it was submitted.

im not toooo fond of the interview process now -_-

Ah that sucks @heyigotnoclue When you go to the website now what does it say?

Also, for anyone that still hasn’t done the standout interview, here are the questions I can remember from mine: Interest in Distributional Requirements/Any trouble engaging?, Academic pursuit beyond the classroom, listening to others (I think it was time or an experience and what you did with the advice?), and a question about diversity.
