Yikes, high winds the last couple of days have blown a lot of leaves off the trees. We lost power for a good bit of the day on Tuesday. Hope it doesn’t go out today.
I just deleted an email that Sunday River (a ski resort in Maine) is opening tomorrow. Here comes winter! @-)
DH forwarded me that email. I got him a season’s pass for his birthday, so he’s excited.
I’ve got a big camping tent set up out back, before packing it for winter. Watching that it doesn’t blow away.
The Portland Art Museum is wonderful, well curated. and small enough not to take a lot of time. Very worth it, even if the weather’s good.
We did stop at LLBean outlet and got me a lovely warm down vest @40% off. It’s very cool in the 40s and even below! We don’t really have any plans and will play it by ear.
We are in Portland now until flying out 10/23!
We are currently in Mount Snow, Vermont. We can see the mountain from the window at our inn and they are making snow. Not many colors on our drive through Vermont today, but we found 4 lovely covered bridges. We had beautiful leaves last weekend through Maine and in the White Mountains earlier this week. We are heading to CT tomorrow and hope to find some color. Last Saturday we stayed with my Aunt and Uncle not far from Middletown, CT and there wasn’t much color. We have had a wonderful time leaf peeping this year and will definitely be back!
We were at Schoodic Point yesterday—lovely! Went to Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory today en route to Portland. Amazing and gorgeous bridge!
We may go and see the lighthouse in Portland. No firm plans but that does sound fun and we enjoy lighthouses. May also go the the museum, as that sounds very nice as well. Perhaps a short boat ride—depends on weather.
The Portland Head Light is in Cape Elizabeth.
If you want a tour of First Parish in Portland UU, PM me.
It’s interesting for history buffs.
Thanks—we did a 1.5 hour tour today—The REAL Portland Tour, which includes a brief stop in Cape Elizabeth. Thanks for you most generous offer.
:x
Still homesick. (Maybe always homesick, Maine is like that).
@himom, you may have discovered it already, but there’s a nice walking path (promenade?) in Portland. If you are facing the water, it’s to the left on the Main Street that runs along the water. We rode our bikes, but it’s nice for walking too. Multiple people recommended the restaurant at the other end of the Main Street, I THINK it’s called Becky’s, for breakfast. There are several lighthouses within an easy ride of Portland. We did a 26 mile bike ride and saw 5, but you could drive that route and more. One of our favorite meal specials was at Old Port Sea Grill. We heard the Holy Donut is a must, and saw lots of people eating them, but we did not try them.
Thanks! Yes, we took The REAL. Portland Tour yesterday, which included 3 lighthouses and lots of interesting history info. We are likely laying low today as H is a bit under the weather from allergies.
Tomorrow we hope to drive to white mountains to see leaves—North Conwat to Mt Washington on Kancamangus Highway and Fryeburg to Gilead @mainelonghorn said it should be lovely.
The Kancamangus drive is beautiful—also long and remote. I have a vague memory of being hungry and not finding anywhere to eat! So, pack a snack and make sure your gas tank is full.
The Kanc won’t take you too long. It’s around 32 miles between Lincoln and Conway. It’s all National Park land so no food/gas services once on the highway. It’s cold there today in the 30s and northern NH got snow today. It’ll be past peak for foliage but still lovely.
The Kancamangus is the best - sometimes you get lucky and see moose there. Make sure you go into the Mt. Washington Hotel, so beautiful!
We found some of the most beautiful leaves on our drive through the Kancamangus last week. We were going to go up to Mt Washington, but the road was closed because of ice and snow.
Today, we drove 302 from North Conway all the way to Twin Mountain. On the North Conway end, there was still some nice foliage…a mix of colors along with trees with no leaves at all. By the time we got through Crawford Notch, which is before the Mt. Washington Hotel, there were precious few leaves…but it’s still a pretty drive. As a reminder…if you need gas in your car…get it before you leave North Conway…because the drive on 302 through Crawford Notch has no gas stations.
The Mount Washington Hotel will be on your right…and absolutely…go in. It’s owned by the Omni group and they have put a gazzilion dollars into this place. It’s pretty amazing!
Traveling south through Mass into Connecticut the foliage is not quite at peak. But close!
I love the Kancamangus. I used to try to use it at least one way when driving to/from Dartmouth when S was a student, although it takes significantly longer to get to Hanover that way for us.
