Can anyone make suggestions to freshmen dorms? We are looking at shared room, communal bathroom, and easy access to classes and food. As a mom I would prefer a newer building but S is flexible!
He is engineering student, however, I believe he will be taking mostly core classes first year, right?
Thank you!
@sunbeams, here is a third party review on UT Austin housing, both On and Off campus :http://www.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■.com/ut/housing/
Here is the UT website for housing info: http://www.utexas.edu/student/housing/?site=1&scode=4&id=140
It’s worth reading thru all of these, seeing prices, reading reviews etc. Some dorms are older, but some have had recent updates. Get your campus map out and see where they are located. As most people say, the campus isn’t really all that big but it is very compact.
My son was headed to one of the Jester dorms. 2 per room, communal bath, Caf, store and other foods within the building. Close to the stadium and the gym. I think it’s the biggest on campus. Most people like it, some love it and others hate it. It’s an individual thing. Good luck and Hook’m.
Also, I was told that most of Jester has been newly updated. I think it’s the biggest on campus.
@TXDad56 Thank you! Very helpful info and link! As of now, S is thinking Jester. We will be there next Monday for admitted student tour in the morning and also Jester housing tour in the afternoon. Looking forward to visiting the campus! Finally!
I visited this last Friday during the Art Department Accepted students reception and tour, First time visiting UT was amazing, I fell in love with the campus immedeatly. The proffesor that I talked to for the Art History department was the sweetest thing ever and made me realize how great and established their art program is. Debating between UT and American University right now with financial aid, but I am very hopeful that I will call myself a longhorn next year!
Has anyone received their financial aid packages yet??? I thought they should be out by now.
Has anyone gotten notification of a scholarship from CNS?
@IbnHooligan A recent tweet from UTAustin Fin Aid said that they would start coming out for incoming freshman end of March – which is about now – and that they would go on for 5-6 weeks. @cc1689 No, we have not heard anything about any scholarships. We are getting anxious about how we will help our LHD to attend UTAustin.
sunbeams, my son will be an electrical engineering freshman in the fall and I was worried about the distance between the engineering side of campus and Jester. But a family friend’s son mentioned that since the electrical engineering building won’t be built until I believe the end of 2017, the electrical engineering classes are scattered around campus. You didn’t specify what type of engineering your son will be in. The family friend’s son said the only dorm somewhat close to the engineering side of campus is Creekside (only all male dorm) but it is sorta remote and not close to anything else so he would not recommend it. He lives at Moore Hill and will live there again next year. Took a tour of Jester and the Honors Quad dorms earlier in March. I think Jester is a good choice although I am still hesitant about possibly long elevator waits. The tour guide said he believed all but 3 floors of Jester West have been renovated. I lived at Jester myself for 2 years but over 30 years ago and fortunately was assigned to the 3rd floor so it was easy to take the stairs.
@parentof3kids Thanks for the info. My S got accepted for Civil engineering major. I have read about the long elevator waits at Jester as well. He didn’t get chosen for the Honors program so I guess Honors Quad dorm is out of the equation. We will check out Jester and Moore Hill when we visit next week! Thanks!
sunbeams, the tour guide said that you don’t have to be in Honors to request the Honors quad although I would imagine being in the Honors program or requesting a roommate who is in Honors would give priority.
@parentof3kids oh cool! Thanks! Will check it out!
I am planning on changing my major right now, and don’t know what to pick. I know I either want to go into the school of natural sciences or cockrell school of engineering. Right now I am an undeclared liberal arts major so basically anything else would be better. What is something easy (or easier I showed say) to get between all the majors in cockrell and natural sciences?
Unfortunately I can’t afford UT Austin as an out of state student. I’ll be going to UCLA /: I was hoping to be in Texas
California is way better than texas bro…
@IbnHooligan I’ve been in Los Angeles my entire life I was looking forward to a change lol
But I guess I can’t complain about UCLA
Texas will still be here when you graduate.
@gettingschooled will it though ?
@parentof3kids I am in engineering honors. Class of '19 though. My roommate is non engineering, he is a business major.
