FAQ for USC Financial Aid

Aznpimpfoyou - your fin aid package should say if you are eligible for work study. If you qualify, it should list the max amount you can earn each year through work study jobs.

I received an SGR. Will that cause a delay in finding out if I received financial aid? I work full time and made appx. 47K last year however, if I get into USC I will not be able to work full time which will take away my abilities to pay for any school and I will be working just to pay for living expenses. Will the school take this into consideration? Also I have heard nothing from FA and I feel like I am just sitting and waiting but could be doing more to help secure some financial aid. It tells me on USConnect that everything is submitted but I have no updates. Can anybody help point me in the right direction or offer some advice?

You can call to find out when they think your package will be done. Did you notify them that you will not be working full time next year? If not, I would put that in writing and submit it via USConnect.

I received a very low amount of grants from USC, can I show them what other universities have given me or do you think calling them would make a difference?

Mastermind - I tried calling, you can certainly do that and they are cordial and will talk with you about your package. In my case however it made no difference and I did not get any sense that they would have cared what other schools had offered.

Mastermind - you can file an appeal with finaid through USConnect. We know 2 families that did that - neither received any increase. I have a feeling there was not as much money to go around this year for some reason. Or they tried to spread it around as much as possible.

Please help answer a question.

My D is a Spring 2013 admit, and she just got the Fin. Aid package (she received the email, so it should be complete).

My question is if it says the EFC is $X, is $X for the whole year?

In other words, for next year (assume exactly the same family financial), are we expecting EFC to be $X or $2X for the whole year?

Thanks for your help.

Spoke with the Fin. Aid office, it will be $2X for the full year.

Just curious, if I don’t get any scholarships, will I still be able to get grants and pay for USC? Assuming that my parents’ income bracket is around 60k and no assets.

squiggles1118,
When I submit the letter telling them I won’t be working full time through USConnect, would do I have to select a specific document under “document library” in the document management section for financial aid? Also will they wait until I am officially accepted before letting me know if I made it?

GreenRobes… 60k with few assets should net you a pretty good grant.

When do returning students get their aid packages daughter is away right now and she hasnt forwarded me any e mails etc, she will be a junior this coming fall

^catlover2, based on previous year’s posts, I was expecting it about now, but a couple of other parents reported that the FA office is saying July!

Anxiously awaiting news here as well! A bit worried we won’t get as nice a package as we did last year… although nothing has changed for us financially. Anyone have experience with getting less despite this?

I’m so nervous about my FA package! My family is working class…don’t really have an income, except donations from my grandparents, which comes out to $10,000 per year. My mom and dad earned a small portion of money last year, about $10,000. I calculated the USC FA with the FAFSA with my dad and I’m projected to get approx. $45,000 in aid (hopefully mostly in grants), but I’m going through some major doubts about it because I read on here that the CSS is calculated differently. I’ve worked too hard to get to this point so I hope I can make it work out somehow! I’m willing to go up to $50,000 in loan debt for the time I’m there, but anything beyond that will force me to not attend. If I get a “bad” package, I’ll attempt to squeeze a couple more grands, but I’m expecting the absolute worst. Please, please…I want to go to USC!!! Sorry for that rant.

Hi did anyone recieve a transfer merit scholarship from USC yet? What was your GPA if you received it?
Does USC give more than 8k in university grants?

University grants are based on your financial situation, and will depend on your USC calculated need. Read page one of this thread for detailed information on what is in the typical financial aid package (i.e., grants, loans, work-study, family contribution). Thus, it is entirely possible someone may get much more than 8k in grants if their USC EFC is very low.

how do I find out what my USC EFC is? I submitted my financial aid docs a long time ago but dont remember seeing anything about EFC or need. I am a white male transfer student and I noticed that there were only a couple of the scholarships I was eligible for. Do I have to hope my EFC is low so I can receive grants and not have to rely soley on loans?

^^You will find that out when financial aid sends you your package. (The estimated calculators have been sketchy so far— good estimates for some, and way off for others)

You should be calling financial aid to see when your package may come and then you will have to be patient and have a plan a, plan b, etc… (unless they have already given you a date as to when your package will be available to view)

Most schools save their merit money for freshman. USC is not alone (and I am surprised they offer any at all). It is freshman class statistics that get reported and relied upon for certain rankings— thus, schools use merit money to get the best and brightest.

I’m trying to understand why my USC Grant was reduced by $10,000 for my senior year, and Cost of Attendance went up $2,000+. To make up for this they gave me a Perkins Loan for $4,250 and my parent has a Plus loan for $8,000 more. Our household income stayed exactly the same, our house value went down. My father passed away last year and we no longer have his Social Security income but my mother has been working overtime to make up the difference. My questions:

  1. Isn’t a Perkins Loan for very low income? I’ve never been offered this before
  2. Would the death of my father last year result in a decrease in Grant money?
My mother is 61 and close to retirement and I thought they considered that. Can anyone give me any thoughts on this. My mother will appeal this but we’re just trying to understand why they would drop my Grant by $10K. Thank you.
