Fashion fads you love, miss, or wish would go away

Belly button piercing and crop tops.
Tattoos
Ugg boots, yes I know they’re cozy but not attractive
Wearing lululemons as street clothes with short tops or flannels

“I rarely wear heels - just doesn’t fit my lifestyle - but I don’t get all the moaning how uncomfortable they are. I get not dashing through airports or being on your feet all day long, but for something like going out to dinner where you put them on and the only walking you are doing is from a car to a restaurant or theater - I don’t find them uncomfortable at all. Maybe less practical because you can’t suddenly break into a run if you needed to.”

Agree - there is nothing wrong with a well-designed heel of reasonable height. A 4-5" heel is a deal breaker right on the spot. A 2-3" heel can be made sturdy and comfortable for several hours of wear if designed to balance the body weight (look at the heels ballroom dancers wear). All of my heels have to pass a short run test even though they are not intended for running. You should see the look on the SA’s faces when I dash through the shoe department.

Love:

  • Leggings except when worn with short tops, as if they’re pants. (Which just looks embarrassing, like going out with only nylons and a blouse on.)
  • Long dresses, yay, I hope they stay fashionable for the next 30 years. (But they’re probably “out” already, what would I know?)
  • Lagenlook, although it’d mostly look silly on me. Love it on the right person, though.
  • Did someone say straight long hair is “in”? Finally! That’s why I never changed my hairstyle. I knew it’d come back one of these decades.
  • Big thick hipster mustaches and long beards, although I’ve only seen them in photographs, never in the wild. It’s like the Victorian era come to life. Maybe it’s annoyingly hipper-than-thou, and probably it was in 1890 too, but I haven’t found a time machine so that’ll do. It’s just fun. Only they should come with the ability to play ragtime piano.

Hate:

  • Stiletto heels. Why are spiky points on your feet pretty?
  • Pointed toes; only Cruela d’Evil should wear them
  • Animal prints; don’t get it at all
  • Pre-torn jeans. What, too lazy to tear your own jeans?
  • Polyester or synthetic-looking anything. Dear Fabric, if you’re going to be synthetic, at least pretend not to be.
  • Nylons. That’s what leggings are for. Or skin – worn well for thousands of years.
  • Those pink and blue colors that are supposed to be this year"s “in colors.” Major yuck. Who wants to dress like gender-coded diaper packages?
  • “What Not to Wear.” I hate shows / books etc that say you “must” wear stripes, or a certain length of dress, or short hair after a certain age, or this-or-that because it’s “slimming” … rather than, well, because you like it! (Incidentally, this final “Hate” cancels all the others, actually! If you really like polyester, okay, enjoy  )

Here is one more trend that I do not like: bare legs with long boots. What’s wrong with wearing tights? Do goosebumps on pale, bluish skin (resembling that of a grocery store chicken) look better than tights?!

I love leggings and low-heeled boots or flats, but only when worn with a tunic-length top or jacket. I also like boot-cut pants and am sorry that look is fading away. Upthread, someone mentioned hating the preppy look but I love it and have since my college days in the early 80s.
I hate tattoos and I hate pajama pants worn as street clothes. To me, that’s the new going out in public with curlers in one’s hair, something one rarely sees anymore.

I love the circular infinity scarves. They are easy to wear and comfortable.
Love the athletic- leisure trend on the right bodies.

I think that the problem with the strapless wedding gowns is that like bras, people don’t get them fitted right. Add a little extra fabric. Or if it’s not for your body shape, ITS NOT FOR YOUR BODY SHAPE! I think they are fine for those that wear them well.

I too love that athletic wear has come around so that it can just be seen as not fabric to sweat in but fabric to wear. Much different than raggedy old baggy sweat pants.

Re the strapless wedding gowns, I was sure that D would not choose one. She was actually looking for another style when we fell in love with THE DRESS which was strapless. It was fitted well and looked good on her, but I agree not for everyone.

About the long, straight hair: as I said, I think it’s pretty. I’m just tired of seeing pictures of, for example, a sorority or cheerleaders or dancers or other group of young women where every single woman has long straight hair.

Pizzagirl remarked upthread that hairstyles have fashions, and in previous years women might have all worn curls or wedges or Farrah haircuts or, indeed, the long straight hair that was fashionable in the sixties. Yes, and those fashions became tedious as well.

I’d rather not see women torture their hair to follow current styles, and instead pick styles that suit their own hair. I understand why black women straighten their hair, but I’m sad that natural black hair is deemed, explicitly or not, to be unacceptable in some jobs and classrooms.

I was never able to wear any of the popular hair styles. I dreamed of long, straight hair and did my best to keep my short hair from being too curly and frizzy. Fail. Now I love my hair and it’s perfect and low maintenance- all 2 inches of it!

I was in a meeting this morning sitting behind a guy with a man bun and I was thinking about this thread.

MoWC, I have stick-straight hair. I dreamed of curls.

"Long, straight hair is another fashion I’ll be glad to see over. Yawn. Long hair is pretty, but long, straight hair on every young woman, even those who have gorgeous curls or waves, is silly.

What about people who have naturally straight hair and want to grow it long?"

What about it? I kind of think this is a woman’s thread, ucb.

“Pointed toes; only Cruela d’Evil should wear them”

Properly fitting ones are no problem, as the angled part shouldn’t really start til above where your toes are, so they don’t get squished. That means, however, that the look really only works for those of us (myself included) who have relatively small feet.

I have stick-straight hair and honestly I’ve never wished for curls at all.

I don’t mind pointed heels, or even 4 inch heels. I call women who wear 5-7 inch heels “the toddlers” bc the toddle when the walk bc it is too high for them. They look ridiculous! If you can’t rock it, just don’t!

When I saw the reference to “toddlers” I thought it was referring to small children wearing high heels a la Suri Cruise. LOL

I did not know of the lagenlook style. I Googled. It’s just overwhelming looking. It requires a very, very tall graceful woman to pull it off at all, IMO.

How can anyone in menorpause wear lagenlook? A midlayer as well as a top layer…HAHAHA.

I’d never heard of the lagenlook before, so I googled images. Apparently it means to dress like an unmade bed?

I’ve never heard of lagenlook, either, and, after Googling, I can say I don’t recall ever seeing anyone wearing those kind of clothes, either. I mean, lots of people wear drapey cardigans but I’ve never seen the whole look, and especially have not seen those dresses with the weirdly shaped skirts.

Is it part of some specific subculture? Is there some sort of regional component? It is definitely not a Southern California thing.

Had others heard the word before this thread? Does anyone want to confess to wearing those sort of clothes? I’m perplexed!

Oh yea, I’m not a fan of the uneven hems, handkerchief or high low. I think they are distracting and messy.

I also dislike short slips with sheer long skirts or dresses. It really makes the outfit look cheap and trashy.
