Before you detour to footwear, let me just insert a piece of advice someone posted on a thread on this forum a year or so ago. Dress for the “feels like” temperature. I shared this advice with my neighbor who traveled to Atlanta in February. Once she checked the “feels like” temperature, and realized it was in the low 50s, she left her lightweight clothing at home.
The challenge for dressing for an event in April, is the temps still say sweaters, but the blue sky and high sun say sleeveless dress.
I also not sure about the brown nude color that I keep seeing but not sure what color would work. I’d like something that I would wear a lot. I also have a black dress that’s similar with white and a nude trim and was hoping to find shoes for both.
@deb922 , I love your dress! My favorite are the Vince Camuto’s, they are slimmer looking for that dress than the Treasure and Bond. I love those though, I even tried them on last year as all the bloggers were wearing them. But on my size 10 foot, the heel was over 5”. Eek…no thanks.
I was actually going to suggest a style like the Vince Camuto’s and I think you are fine with your height wearing them. Those are very nice. I found the following last year in tan and just ordered them again in black this year. I need the height to be a little lower (for my height and my foot is still iffy sometimes). They are not as dressy as the leather, but the ankle strap is thinner, something you might like. The tan is a prettier color than in the picture. They are very comfy. Other nice colors, too.
Found these, great color for everything and great reviews. I love the middle piece going up the foot. I think that would be lengthening. You could wear with the black dress, also.
My mother thought a basic trench coat with warm zip out lining was a wardrobe basic. I tend to agree and it works for variable temperatures over dresses. I think it’s nice to have a light colored wool coat for spring, but not necessary if you have a trench coat. You can wear a trench coat with spring looking shoes, bags, scarves.
Wear a pashima with the trench and you have a shawl for your sleeveless dress if needed.
I bought a dressy poncho early this year. It come in handy when I wore a DVF dress but the room was freezing. Then I wore it again at an outdoor wedding. It’s my newest form of a pashima
@Singersmom07 I think the one you posted from Anthropologie has a similar drape to the one from Halogen in my original post. I like it but I like the longer profile of the Halogen one better. Thank you!
My Mom also always had a classic trench coat and I’m surprised I have somehow made it this far in my life without having one. That would be something to look for, a good long term investment.
Re: trench coat. You either like the style or you don’t. I don’t. The main reason I don’t is I don’t like coats with belts. I have never owned a trench coat, and I probably never will.
Regardless…if I was going to a fancy schmancy event…i wouldn’t choose a trench coat to wear as part of my fashion statement for the event. It would just be…a coat.
@deb922 I love the duster from Talbot’s and I would much rather have it than a coat because you can wear it inside, and I would think there is a strong chance that April in NJ won’t be sleeveless dress weather inside or out. That duster is more fitted which I think goes well with the style of the dress.
I agree with what @“Cardinal Fang” said as well - this is where you need to try on the two together and see how they look.
In general, I like the sweater idea better than a coat.
I would go with a black sandal with the dress. I love the wedge options and completely agree that a flat thong sandal is not that way to go for this event. You are going to look great!
I have dressy black trench coat by Pink Tartan that I bought over ten years ago. It has a removable feather and organza collar that makes it look wintery and even more dressed up. It’s one of my lifetime best purchases and wear it constantly - it’s pretty close to an all season coat. I have a few evening coats, but I end up wearing the black trench because it goes with everything. So, if you are going to buy one good dressy all season coat, it should be black and it should be long enough to look good with a dress or pants. Here are a few:

Haha! I have a pure white cat as you can see on my avatar. One trick is to dress and out the door! Black pants are awful because it seems he know and wants to jump in my lap.
The Pink Tartan coat has a slight sheen, so nothing sticks to it, and that’s really the key. I have a gorgeous black Burberry trench that I never wear because his fur seems to find its way to it no matter what I do.
I love coats…as can be evidenced by the surplus of them I have in my closet. I have red, pink, white, black, grey, yellow…lots of options. None were extremely high end…my Coach pink raincoat is likely the most costly I own.
What I really want is a Burberry jacket. Preferably red.
I like the dress in the first post. I struggle with what to wear over dresses. I usually end up with a pashmina or a cardigan. I did on impulse buy a black thick knit cape like poncho a few years ago from Banana Republic. I’ve worn that a few times. To me a lot of the jackets posted take a dress that is fitted and add a jacket or coat that isn’t tailored and to me changes the whole look. For example I like the jacket in post 46 from Anthropologie that @Singersmom07 posted. I just don’t love it with a dress. I’d wear it with a pair of jeans.
Absolutely loved all the coats @Gourmetmom posted. If I lived in a cold climate I’d invest in a nice coat.
