If I lived in a colder climate, I’d likely have to have an entire closet devoted to coats and wraps. I get cold and love being stylishly warm.
I also don’t see the point of having a lovely fitted dress covered up with a coat or wrap that doesn’t allow the lovely lines of the dress to be seen.
If I was set on wearing the dress, I’d likely wear a cashmere cardigan or wrap that ended at the waist. Probably I’d also buy those sexy woolford tights for extra warmth. I can’t handle 40-60 temps in a dress.
Since I get hives from cold, I rarely wear dresses other than home in HI. I just can’t count on weather being sufficiently warm and feel goosebumps and hives are NOT a flattering look.

I agree with the posters who have said that it may not be warm enough in April to wear that dress, I live in Michigan I do really get it. I’m hoping that it will be warm enough and I was considering a coat to wear over the dress on the way to the event if it was warm enough but still a little chilly. I have gotten a lot of great suggestions and I will probably either go with a duster, a wrap or a light cardigan and have another outfit if it’s too cold for that.
I wouldn’t wear tights with that dress either.
HImom- I grew up in TN and used to be cold all the time, after the -15 degree day we had in January I will go out if it’s above 30 and find myself thinking it’s balmy. So I definitely have a different cold tolerance than I used to!
I’m voting for inside wrap or jacket, and outside coat.
Today I’m packing my bag for a trip to unpredictable temperatures, and bringing a sleeveless dress, matching duster, coordinating sweater and shawl… and a spring coat that fits over the dress,duster, sweater… if I need to wear them all together for warmth. Summer flats. Winter ankle boot. It’s a travel grouping I use a lot, especially after a diverted flight with an unanticipated overnight in a blizzard when I’d packed for warm sunshine. Even then I had gloves, and a cashmere shawl to wear over an ankle length windbreaker raincoat.
I was in a store today and it is very very similar in style and weight. I think the pictures on the website did not convey what this coat is, but it’s a spring raincoat.
It’s not a topper for a dress, but a spring raincoat. I think I’m getting confused as to what the OP wants, something to wear over the dress if it’s not warm or a coat?
@deb922- haha! That’s probably because I’m getting confused as I often am when it comes to fashion. I originally was looking for a coat to wear over the dress until I got to the event. I’m just not sure I’ve found one I like enough to buy though I do still like the original Halogen one. I posted because I wasn’t sure about it. I like the linen one but agree it’s probably too early in the season to wear. Then I would wear my cardigan I already have at the event in case it’s chilly inside. I also like the duster or the idea of a wrap, which I could wear if it was warmer and also keep on during the event. Likely too early for that though. Or I could just wear my fleece coat and have the duster, wrap or cardigan during the event. I hope that’s clear, that is my thinking right now and I will come up with something. Again thanks for all the ideas and I don’t mind if you post about shoes, I always like to read the fashion threads and get fashion ideas.
@cellomom2 I love that dress! I may be biased because I own two of those dresses in different prints- they are so comfortable and flatter a multitude of body types! I wore one to a wedding in Buffalo in October- it was quite chilly and a longer cardigan was perfect… You probably will be outside for such a short time that a coat won’t be necessary. I agree that a wrap would also be appropriate. Have fun!
@Sdgal2 thanks! I agree, I would buy another of those dresses in another color, I’d love to have one in blue! They pack really well too, don’t tend to get wrinkled.
I just splurged and bought this - and got $250 off with their promotion. They make the same asymmetrical zip jacket in several fabrics and lengths, and I have it in a shorter, nubby black and white tweed. I think this will go with a lot and really make the outfit.
A classic look I really like, over a sleeveless party dress in cold weather, is full length fur. However, the days of that coat as a wardrobe staple are long long long gone.
It’s warm, it’s dressy, it’s a statement piece. But not in style most places.
My sister who is quite the fashionista loves to rent jackets and coats from Rent the Runway. She has rented some very expensive statement coats. She has the unlimited subscription.

Can someone tell me why it matter that the event in in NJ in April re: the sleeveless dress? Cold weather climates have heat (and AC too!)!!!
You may actually be warmer inside when it’s cooler outside as opposed to being in a hot climate outside and having the AC set to zero!
If you’re a cold person, you’d likely be cold no matter what. And if you wear a sleeveless dress without goosebumps most of the time, you’ll likely be fine inside.
