Favorite Christmas Movies

I love White Christmas with Bing and Danny Kaye!

My sister and I sing the “Sisters” song every year! By the way, I saw the Broadway version…not sure how it was really on Broadway…but out here in California they had the sisters wearing something other than the classic BLUE dresses (pink I think?) in the “Sisters” dance number.
I must be a purist…just make the stage show like the movie!!! Don’t mess with classic scenes!

Okay, rant over! Merry Christmas!

White Christmas - When they sing, “We’ll follow the old man…” I cry every year.

Bells of St. Mary.

It’s a Wonderful Life.

I read Nancy & Plum.
but the Ref is a good one- just added that to Netflix

I just can’t watch Bing Crosby without thinking about how abusive he was to his kids…makes that nice guy image very creepy.

Love, Actually. I always want to watch it at Christmas.

Strong use of the holidays in story line:
While You were Sleeping
When Harry Met Sally
The Family Stone
Home Alone
Bridget Jones’ Diary

I don’t think this has a holiday plot, but anyone growing up when and where I did probably remembers the TV station in New York showing The March of the Wooden Soldiers/Babes in Toyland every year (the Laurel and Hardy version) - I think right before the Yule Log came on.

And does anyone remember the Littlest Angel with Johnnie Whittaker? I think that was a TV show though rather than a movie…

Christmas Story is a staple - my father always listened to Jean Shepherd’s radio show on WOR, so we already knew the story pretty much.

The past couple of years I have watched the Polar Express - our community band played selections from the soundtrack at our holiday concerts last year, just love the music!

ILoveLA, we got “Tokyo Godfathers” from Netflix and loved it. I’m glad you recommended it, and I’m glad that fendergirl started this thread!

Two I’d forgotten about that have been on TV this weekend:

The Muppet Christmas Carol (starring Michael Caine as Scrooge) - a real favorite when my kids were little

Scrooge - the musical version with Albert Finney. I don’t know how I forgot this one because it’s what I always put on when I do my annual wrapping afternoon. Love the music and all the wonderful British actors from a generation or two ago.

They have no holiday content, but to me the movies most associated with Christmas are the three Lord of the Rings movies.

Remember when one of the highlights of the holiday season was having the extended edition DVD of last year’s Rings movie come out, closely followed by the release of this year’s movie?

Netflix now has the theatrical version of Fellowship of the Ring on streaming video. I think I’ll watch it and rent the DVD’s of the other two. For me, Rings means Christmas.

We have almost a month’s worth of Christmas movies we like to watch every year so the viewing began last weekend.

Elf (we watch this almost every month!)
A Christmas Story
Jingle All the Way
Christmas with the Kranks (although we’ve all read the book, Skipping Christmas and prefer it, still like the movie)
Deck the Halls
The Santa Clause 1,2 and 3
It’s a Wonderful Life (can count on this one to get H in tears)
Miracle on 34th Street
Christmas Vacation
Bad Santa (I have no idea why I laugh at this one - I’m normally a real prude)
The Grinch (D likes the Jim Carey version, I like the cartoon)
Surviving Christmas
You’ve Got Mail
Love Actually
some of the ABC Family Channel Christmas movies

We still have half of our Christmas collection on VHS tapes.

This year’s Hallmark Christmas movie “November Christmas” is on TV tonight.

I googled for “The Ref” It sounds very funny. Would you recommend it for a xmas gift?

I haven’t seen the Ref for a while- it would really depend on who I was giving it to. It has an overall bitter tone.

Sat night H & I and D2 went to see Harry Potter-( it was supposed to be a 4some- but friends parents wouldn’t let her out of the house).
I hadn’t seen the previous movie or read the last two books ( neither had H), and agreed that not only was it pretty dark but they need a glossary in the opening credits
-the theatre had just undergone a remodel & while it wasn’t IMAX, it was state of the art technology

 • and I wish I had known they had Miro Tea & Theo Chocolate*

This brooding mood was set by the trailers which were extensive & heavy on green screen technology- I prefer " small films"

D2 liked it- as she pointed out- it was aimed at those who had grown up with the books. ( not their parents)
Harry Potter was basically the first book she had read- in 3rd grade so she is roughly the same age as the characters.

I wanted to get HP-DH out of my head- so I rented* Love Actually/i. However- while I still enjoyed it- it also more painful to see Liam Neesons’ character than I anticipated & my H made it worse by snickering when Emma Thompson opened her present.
:stuck_out_tongue:
( I usually don’t like movies with sequels- except for things like Jean De Florette / Manon of the Spring & LOTR- but I kinda think that a sequel to Love Actually could be nice)

Tonight I think I will watch* Planes, Trains & Automobiles*.
;)

I watched “Four Christmases” the other day. I had never seen that one. It was okay. I’ve watched the Home Alone’s so far also. Lots more viewing to go! one month!!

Now this is a great thread, sorry parents I can’t resist

I’m a sucker for ABC Family’s 25 Days of Xmas!

So to name a few

Rudolph The red nosed reindeer
+The Year without a santa Caus
+The Grinch
+Frosty the snowman
+Miracle on 34th street
+and on every Christmas eve…ELF! Love the movie :D

mango, when i was watching home alone on ABC yesterday it said 3 more days till 25 days of xmas, so now we are down to 2 days!!

Do you remember Christmas Every Day?

emeraldkity, Thank you for the caution. The little I saw/read was funny. I didn’t realize the bitter tone. Now I see it could easily be knowing the topic. My D likes quiry funny movies. I thought it may work for her obviously wrong.

Mine is the Muppets Christmas Carol, it is my favorite version and I watched it Friday of Thanksgiving weekend, by myself, when everyone was out of the house.

I will probably indulge in It’s a Wonderful Life, but need that big block of 3 hours.

all my faves have been mentioned, but seriously, if you’ve never seen “Trading Places” with Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd, get it!

My dad and I watch it over and over again and end up in uncontrollable tears of laughter every time. In fact, maybe we should bring the DVD on our Christmas train trip to California…
