Totally get it. I’m a Poshmark reseller and I find gorgeous clothes at thrift stores, consignment stores and goodwill. Sometimes they are even in my size and I keep!
However, it’s just lucky if you find something.

I have purchased a couple of items feom Poshmark but only: 1) if it is a designer I know and I’m confident of the fit and 2) if the item is "new with tags.’ Yes, you need to get lucky.
I have a 1500 item closet, but I’m a big buyer, too. Always make sure you get measurements and read the seller’s love notes to get an idea of what type of seller they are. NWT clothes can also have imperfections that are not discussed. I don’t care if what I buy is new or used as long as I have full measurements and confidence in the seller.
I think their clothes run on the small side by a lot.
J. Jill and Land’s End
I always think NWT lends itself to counterfeit clothes . . .
I’m enjoying learning of brands I haven’t tried. PreCovid I wore AG jeans and TShirts and I like Garnet Hill for cashmere sweaters. Anthropologie and Nordstrom for dresses. Athleta and Lululemon for athletic wear. My body isn’t enjoying the tighter fit of AG anymore. I bought two pairs of Frank and Eileen pants last year with a looser leg but I’m missing good denim in my wardrobe. I mainly live in exercise clothes. Black leggings can go from the gym to out with a change of type of top. I am also living in some slight flare leg pants from Vuori since my knee replacement. I like Vuori for pants but don’t care for their tops.
My Nordstrom closed and I don’t have good local shops so I’m mainly ordering online.
My favorite gift to myself is a wool sweater from Jenny Kayne. I love the color and I wear it several times a week. It was 30% off and worth every penny to me.
Muji also runs small and I believe is another Japanese country.
COS, &other stories, Everlane for work and casual.
Max Mara, Lafayette, Boss for nicer stuff.
I do shop at Uniqlo, but it’s a bit of hit or miss. They are generally one season clothes for me.
My favorite shoe store is Cole Haan . If I watch out for sales, I could get really nice boots and shoes for around 100. I have spent money on Todd, Ferragamo, Gucci, and they are not as comfortable.
Adding Ara shoes as my go to for ballet flats.
Luxury brand shoes can be a hit or miss, definitely. I have some amazingly comfortable Jimmy Choo boots and some great Valentino pumps picked off RealReal and Saks clearance sales, but I prefer Paul Green shoes because they’re consistently comfortable for me. I also recently discovered and really love my lug sole loafers by Rothy.
Have gotten D some lovely sale dressy shirt dresses from Uniqlo that she’s worn fit many years and different events, including weddings and funerals. They wash beautifully and rarely wrinkle.
Costco too!
When I worked, Ann Taylor and Lands End.
I’m a chunky monkey so no petite stuff for me.
Lately, both my daughter and I have gotten lucky with tops and sweaters from Loft. She needs nice clothes for work and they have stuff that is work appropriate (not see through, not too short, not too low cut, etc.)
Pants and jeans are a different story - typically Gap or Old Navy (again for both of us).
Patagonia for outdoor clothing.
Gap for jeans (they just fit right on me).
Vuori, Everlane, Patagonia, REI, Athleta, Target — that’s pretty much it. I shop the thrift store when i need to stock up on t-shirts and I’ll browse for other things as well. Sometimes I get lucky! Oh and how can I forget — hand me downs from my sons since I’m a 53 year old woman built like a teenage boy.
Guessing we are built similarly!
At least half the pants and jeans I own are Frame and I have a fair number of Nili Lotan pieces. Both brands are great for a really straight build.
Lululemon leggings are a favorite for the gym, and Stio for casual/outdoor. (It’s really hard to wear out the latter, so it’s not surprising there’s a fair amount of it in my closet.)
I like Pure’s oxford cloth shirts for layering, and have several Cino shirts for summer.
Carbon to Cobalt and Velvet dominate my t-shirt collection. (For such a simple item, so hard to get the right fit.)
There are a number of brands I like a lot but just don’t need/own much of. (Xirena, Apiece Apart, etc.) But I’ll always look when it’s available.
It’s great when those Patagonia jackets and hoodies I buy for special gifts come back around to me!
I wear mostly Talbots pants and jeans because they fit me well and there’s a shop in town I can try on. I like Garnet Hill for tops and sweaters, have gotten a fair amount of T shirts in the last year and hope the quality isn’t changing as stated by another poster. Also like Boden.
I wear mostly casual clothes and am in a cold weather state so I like icebreaker for winter hoodies, they’re a splurge but last a long time. New favorite is Fjallraven but very expensive, can only buy very occasionally. I like J McLaughlin also and have a fair amount that my sister has gifted me, don’t usually buy it myself because I balk at the price tag. I have gotten a lot of t shirts at Lands End, recently bought several on sale and really like the quality.
A new favorite brand is Spartina that I discovered while traveling in Charleston and Savannah. Very fun and I like their colors especially. I don’t wear dresses much but bought a really cute dress that fits well and a cute sweater to go with it.
I think it will be fun to check out some of the brands that I haven’t heard of before.
So funny you say that because I’m actually very curvy - pretty much right in between hourglass and pear shape. I learned about Frame jeans from the So Susie blog. I guess she’s right when she says the jeans she recommends work on everyone. Most of mine are the Le High Flare style. When I bought my first pair, I was surprised by the complements I got on a simple pair of jeans so added a few colors and washes in the same style.
I used to buy a fair amount from Boden but then tapered off because I didn’t care for the prints they were putting out (funnily enough, the dress I’m wearing this weekend for Easter is an OG Boden). I looked again a couple of weeks ago and saw some things but there were lots of negative reviews on the changes in their quality. For their price point, if it’s not on sale, the quality has got to be there.
Since the pandemic, I’ve noticed quite a few changes in fabric quality for brands that I regularly buy from.
