Really? 20-some posts and 480+ views, and no one has mentioned “The Wire”?

Heathens.

I love The Closer too. My kids think I remind them of the woman - not the way I look, but the way I act.

My favorite show, which I used to have to watch it all in one weekend is 24.

I believe The Wire was mentioned in post #3. I second, or third, it, by the way., along with The West Wing.

We like Doctor Who, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, 30 Rock, Community, Parks and Rec, House, Modern Family, Parenthood.

I will also admit to watching American Pickers, American Choppers and Man vs. Food.

We also watch lots of sports and news shows.

oops, then… never mind.

Breaking Bad.
The Walking Dead (requires a strong stomach, though.)

“Revenge” is my new guilty pleasure. Our cable company (Charter) has it free on-demand. If you have that, you may be able to catch up.

Netflix instant queue has all 4 seasons of Mad Men.

And since you’ve missed nearly 20 years of TV, let me just say ---- SEINFELD!!! I’ve seen every episode several times and never tire of it.

My daughter would recommend The Simpsons, and I cannot argue with her.

It requires a particularly twisted sense of humor and an appreciation for bad puns, but I love Spike’s 1000 Ways to Die.

Everybody Loves Raymond. I tell my dh that it’s like a documentary about his family.

On DVD: Lost (particularly the first several seasons; it is crucial that you watch the episodes in order) and The West Wing

On TV now: Person of Interest, MI-5 (on public television), House (I’ve been watching reruns out of order, and it works)

I would add Weeds (though not so much this last season) and Dexter for those with strong stomachs.

For the Lost inspired- try Fringe, but make sure you stick with the old ones until the 6th episode or so. I didn’t like the pilot and had to be dragged kicking and screaming into it. Love it now, but I can’t see anyone just trying to pick it up.

Old episodes of Supernatural are fun too. Gilmore Girls will bring a smile to your face too.

I prefer the old Prime Suspects with Helen Mirren too.

My H has stated I only eed a TV with 2 or 3 channels. I have since branched out some. HGTV, especially House Hunters. Food Network, including old episodes of Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. Travel Channel’s Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations episodes old and new. WE TV has Ghost Whisperer- midnights and from 3 to 5 pm weedays. PBS has many shows. Without a Trace episodes are fun. Hallmark, Lifetime, AMC and TCM movies. I could really watch a lot of TV if I chose to record it. Our public library has many DVDs, including BBC series. I have gotten hooked on shows that I dismissed the first time they were shown. Jeopardy now has many highly educated contestants, and by now we all know more trivia- it can be fun when young contestants are asked about events before they were born but we all lived through. There is no lack of TV shows most days although there are certain evenings nothing good seems to be on…

Don’t forget to get those books from your public library to read while watching TV- during commercials at least.

Isn’t it amazing how much extra time you have when you are no longer coming up with daily family dinners (when it’s just the two of you there are more leftovers from when you do cook and the noncoooking spouses can learn to fend for themselves), cleaning house or doing tons of laundry? Unlike the early, prekid, days you have your act together and are more efficient with household tasks, as well as have already spent the time acquiring the home and goods to fill it. Careers also likely established- no trying to get ahead anymore. Also so many free evenings not spent attending child events, setting a good example or being sure the munchkins are doing their homework. Time to enjoy life while the kids are enjoying theirs.

Friday Night Lights. You don’t have to be a football person to enjoy this amazing series. Once you start, you will not be able to stop. We were up late, night after night to watch “just one more epsiode” because we were so engrossed. The whole series is on Netflix instant watch now. Just try it–the series gets better and better and ends with a fantastic finale.

The Sopranos and Breaking Bad are really good, too. But not as good as Friday Night Lights.

Castle is the only one we keep current on. We are watching Dr. Who’s from a few years ago. We probably will go back to How I met your Mother.

Addenda. All of Micheal Palin’s travel DVDs- Around the World, Pole to Pole, Pacific Rim… Agatha Christie’s Poirot Mysteries on PBS. BBC’s Coupling series, Keeping Up Appearances, the James Herriot All Creatures Great and Small episodes- available from our local library or purchaesd. Nature episodes- planet Earth, the Oceans… Raunchy/R rated shows and movies you didn’t dare borrow/rent when the teens were home. Old MASH episodes, and other TV shows good another time around. This season’s Dancing With the Stars.

Don’t forget the old home movies, especially the early years. All babies and small children are cute and uninhibited. I perused the birth to five photo album as well just before son’s recent birthday. Age of innocence and lack of inhibitions, plus they give the parents adoring looks, unlike recent memory… Time to edit out too many minutes of some scenic byways footage as well…
