Favorite TV shows for the empty nest

Hi - I have not watched much TV for about 19 years… Now with an empty nest, a DVR, and time on my hands, I do not know what good shows are out there! What do you like, or recommend?

In no particular order

The Good Wife
House
The Amazing Race
Breaking Bad
Mad Men
House Hunters International
Project Runway

My husband and I also never watched TV while raising our children. Now that we are empty nesters, we started bringing home DVD’s of The Wire and went from watching about 2 hours of TV a year to watching 65 hours (5 seasons) of The Wire in two months. It was a great series. I can’t imagine watching it on TV because it’s like a complicated novel, with lots of plot and characters, and you have to plow through it to keep it all straight.

The Good Wife
Revenge
Old Series of Friday Night Lights

Daily show
NCIS
Criminal Mind
Dr. Phil (don’t judge)
Lifetime movies or LMN when I can get it
House Hunter (both international and US)

Modern Family
Project Runway
NCIS
Selling New York (HGTV)

Restaurant Impossible
Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives
Law and Order SVU
Another vote for House Hunters

Daily Show and Colbert, for sure.

I like to occasionally watch shows the kids mention that they like, just to keep up with the conversation. (I do draw the line at Jersey Shore, however!)

Old series - catch up earlier seasons before starting new:

Fringe
Mad Men
Burn Notice
Castle
30 Rock
Parks & Recreation

New series this fall:

Revenge
Once Upon a Time
Person of Interest

Reality shows:

Top Chef
House Hunters

Reality shows guilty pleasures:

Say Yes to the Dress
Toddlers and Tiaras (like a train wreck - can’t believe it but can’t stop watching)

Old series no longer on the air:

Buffy
Firefly
Veronica Mars
Gilmore Girls
Lost (just to see what all the excitement was about)

Other shows I watch but would not necessarily recommend unless you’re really bored:

Pan Am
Glee
Ringer

We’ve been watching a lot of BBC America on-demand. Gawd, it’s getting to the point where we keep asking each other what was just said- we get the slang but miss full sentences, esp when delivered fast.
Love Ted Danson on CSI. Actually don’t mind Blue Bloods, though every time I see Tom Selleck, I can’t help but remember Magnum.

And, without the kids around, we catch a lot more Chris Matthews and Lawrence O’Donnell.

Parenthood
Castle
Amazing Race
Dancing With the Stars (don’t hate)
30 Rock
Modern Family
The Middle

My favorite: The Closer

(get the previous seasons on DVD)

New seasons starting this week for:

Covert Affairs
Bones
Burn Notice

Sunday Morning (my all time FAVORITE show)
Shark Tank (sadly, no longer on the air
Parenthood
DWTS (Monday night only)
Modern Family
60 minutes and/or 20/20, depending on the story

Keep missing Mad Men, The Good Wife, and Revenge. Is that hard to start mid-season?

NCIS
NCIS
NCIS
The Big Bang Theory
The Science Channel, especially Through the Wormhole

Can’t believe nobody has mentioned Jimmy Fallon…we have been TIVOing since August…Love it…

(Don’t love that we are still out of power so TIVO is down)…

also, add Criminal Minds to the list…

While there are some good current shows, unfortunately the best shows are in the past. Thanks to time and DVDs, you have the chance to catch up on what you’ve missed. The past 19 years have included some of the greatest shows of all time:

The West Wing (for my money, the best drama ever)
ER
The Sopranos
Friends
Frasier
Everybody Loves Raymond

My DH got me hooked on “American Chopper”. I resisted for a couple of years. “Why would I watch a stupid show about guys building motorcycles”, I thought. I was so wrong. The family dynamics, the business side, the friendships, and the real “characters” spark much conversation in our household.

I HIGHLY recommend getting the DVD set of “LOST”. We loved this show and miss it so much. We even had “Lost” theme parties a couple of times. The writing and acting (for the most part) is amazing! Terry O’Quinn and Michael Emerson----nuff said.

I just started watching a couple of weeks ago and found the first five episodes “On Demand” so watched them in two nights before catching the next new episode!

Can’t believe I didn’t mention Dr. Who - the entire new series starting with Doctor Nine.

If we’re talking oldies, I vote for “Twin Peaks”!
