For one of the 250 word supplements for UVa, it asks what your favorite word is and why.
Would it be okay to talk about a word that me and a group of friends made up a few years ago that became really popular and is widely known around the school. Its not in the dictionary or technically even a real word. Would this be too off base and far-fetched? or is it a reasonable approach?
Thanks!

I think as long as you write well, anything is fine. Someone in another thread asked if an applicant can use words from another language, and Dean J said that’s fine. I honestly think it’s what and how you write, not the word you choose to write about.

im curious…what word did you make up? hahah

hahaha well I don’t think I necessarily invented it but the word is “hurro.” Basically a greeting between a group of friends.

Isn’t that the stereotypical way “oriental asians” say hello…? Maybe don’t use that word? Sounds a tad racist actually…

I don’t know if you’re old enough to have watched the Jetsons, but I bet a bunch of admission officers who read that essay will think of Astro, the dog on the Jetsons. :)

LOL Dean J! That was really good. Nice to see a great sense of humor. On a side note, a few of us that grew up with the Jetsons were just talking the other day about Skype and the Jetsons.

Hahaha. There is absolutely no racial slur undertones in the phrase. It’s just how we’ve greeted each other for a few years. Do you guys think its too risky? Should I pick I new word?

Oh, well in that case, I think it’s fine! If Dean J finds it funny or can relate to it somehow, it’s probably a good idea. Sorry I made that really racist connection =D
