All I know about SAT/ACT is that at a good law school, there were many kids whose test scores were a lot lower than mine, but who nevertheless kicked my butt at law school. To my defense, studying for GPA was not one of my goals. My goal was to graduate without flunking out, work as many hours, find out what I wanted to do, and do it after the graduation. What I wanted to do did not require me to have good GPA. What I am trying to say is that for many people relatively lower SAT score does not indicate how well they will do at school. By the way, I had 99.9% in SAT and 3.0 GPA throughout high school, college and law school. I tell you what good test score does show though: it indicates an ability to quickly grasp basic concepts after reading.
@TheBigChef I’ll go out on a limb here and suggest Caplan probably wasn’t a very ethical guy in other areas of his life.
@TheBigChef
You are giving “successful” lawyers/executives/celebrities too much credits. They are doing this kind of shenanigans because many in their circle of friends had done it successfully and/or they themselves might have been beneficiaries of these types of scandals that never were uncovered. Common sense is a “luxury” for common folks. Lol
It’s not a matter of common sense. Caplan figured, correctly, that he was unlikely to get caught. Unluckily for him, he was caught.
Just to clarify HES undergraduates are not eligible for Harvard housing.
Now my default view of those rich white kids at elite schools, especially athletes (maybe other than basketball and football), is that they got in by cheating. They have to prove otherwise.

As you are complaining about the elitist behavior of these parents. You simultaneously disparage Schools like Oberlin and DePaul. I think a lot of us have more in common with these families than we realize
“Sorry, but I don’t believe you and don’t know why I should. People have an enormous ability to deceive themselves. People like to believe they are outstanding.”
Messrs. Dunning and Kruger agree!
It’s a syndrome.
To the comment about athletics going to be less important at the college level because of this - lol!
“One of the accused moms wrote a parenting book - that is just too, too much!”
SMH
This story just keeps going.
How can ANYONE offer an excuse for a LAWYER, who broke the LAW, because he had little chance of getting
caught???

Actual athletes were not involved in this scandal. You may think it’s unfair that athletes are admitted with lower academic qualifications than other students, but nothing about this scandal sheds any light on actual student athletes and their admission. The scandal is that coaches claimed kids were talented athletes when they weren’t.
@hebegebe “Can’s help but wonder if Gigi had some “help” with her SATs as well.”
GiGi is deaf or hard of hearing; she may have had appropriate accommodations
Interesting gossipy bit - according to friends of Loughlin, her kids had like zero interest in even going to college. They had other interests and never took academics seriously. So this nonsense was in no way because these young ladies wanted to go to a specific school or really any school - completely parent driven. Kind of makes the one kid’s vlog more understandable- the kid was just telling the truth.
There’s a difference between lacking common sense and lacking moral character. The cheating lawyer lacks moral character, but probably has plenty of common sense. I’m a fan of accuracy in insults. Insult the guy for what he’s guilty of: not stupidity, but immorality.
“I believe Northeastern is not involved. I think it’s USC, Stanford, UCLA, UTA, Yale, U SanDiego, Wake Forest, and Georgetown that are involved.”
It still astonishes me that Univ. of San Diego (Mean SAT =1275. and 25th-75th% SAT = 1200-1350) is caught up in this. We are not talking about MIT here. Most students of half-way reasonable ability should be able to get admitted to USD through legitimate means. If you have to commit criminal fraud to get admitted to USD perhaps you are not really cut-out for college.
Looks like the ringleader William “Rick” Singer didn’t even go to USC.
Trinity University in Texas…of course a PRIVATE college.
Mostly PRIVATE colleges in the scandal. Are they easier to game than the publics?
I watched a snippet of her vlog. Loughlin definitely wanted to go to USC, to party. She made it clear that she had no interest in academics.
I wonder if the Caplan guy will be disbarred for this? I guess might depend on how this plays out.
