Feds uncover admissions test cheating plot

She did. 100% legit.

Rich dad actually gave USC Hospital $25 million for treating hearing loss.

“The Carusos’ teenage daughter, Gianna, was born with mild to moderate hearing loss, and doctors and therapists have worked closely with her ever since. Although Gianna could hear some sounds with assistance, she relied on reading lips to ensure she understood what was being said. This presented challenges in daily life, including in the classroom. This all changed as Gianna experienced a miracle last year, Caruso said, when she saw the team of USC doctors who provided her with a new highly sensitive hearing device that was inserted into her ear canal.”

“The minute the hearing device went in, there was a huge difference. Gianna immediately started crying — all of us started crying,” Caruso said. “It was a life changer.”

These schools have their priorities wrong. They’re educational institutions. Athletics shouldn’t trump academics and coaches shouldn’t have this much sway over college admission.

And can we leave legit athletes alone? Yes, some kids get in because they’re talented athletes - seems to be a hook that folks complain about because their kids don’t have it. The assumption that these athletes are stupid is just tiresome.

Regarding Caplan – I’ll be interested to see if he’ll be disbarred. He’s an officer of the court and his participation is especially egregious to me. (Call me naive). This part of his conversation with CW-1 (Rick Singer) I find especially galling:

[quote]
28CAPLAN Done, done, not a problem.
CW-1 She’ll, she’ll think, right, she’ll think she took it. She’ll feel good about herself. She’ll get a great score and she’ll be like, “Mom and dad, can I…” You know what’s going to happen? She’s going to say, “Dad,can I re-take the test again? ’Cause I think I can do better.” And that happens all the time, right? She’ll get whatever, and we will say no, just so you know that.
CAPLAN But it will be somewhere in the 30s…
CAPLAN Okay, well look, we are in for the, get her extra time, to the extent we can, extra time on the test.
CW-1 Righ
tCAPLAN And then, and taking the test one time and get her a, you know, a score in the 30s.
CW-1 Correct.
CAPLAN We are in for that, at 75, not an issue.
CW-1 Done.
CAPLAN Done. The other stuff (laughing)–
CW-1 That will be up to you guys, it doesn’t matter to me.
CAPLAN Yeah, I, I hear ya. ** It’s just, to be honest, I’m not worried about the moral issue here. I’m worried about the, if she’s caught doing that, you know, she’s finished. ** So I, I just–
CW-1 It’s never happened before in twenty-some-odd years. The only way anything can happen is if she–
CAPLAN Someone talks–

If you’re coming to this thread to complain that you’re shocked, shocked to learn that athletes get a boost in college admission, you haven’t been on CC long.

Agree, @Scipio . USD really surprised me. Just why? CSUFullerton wasn’t good enough? Admittedly, the campus is stunning at USD.

Lori Loughlin Fired From All Hallmark Projects Over #CollegeCheatingScandal …

I hope this scandal is a wake-up call for all unethical parents/kids who may be thinking about cheating…

Trust me orange suit doesn’t look good on you no matter what! Expulsion doesn’t look good …

Think twice

I hope this scandal will cause parents to tip off the FBI to other similar schemes. I don’t believe this is the only one.

What is strange to me, is that anyone could Google the names of these kids and see zero sports records/photos. Maybe my town is small ( yes it’s tiny) but kids are so interconnected on instagram etc. How could this ever fly? My kids would know in a second exactly who rows and who doesn’t. Would take but a few phone calls to the head of students/dean/head of school to rat out these kids. And especially in many of these cases, kids are going to local schools so the connections are in the community. No one knew a trustee and sent an email saying hey, this looks wrong? Or had a conversation at a dinner party?
So here’s how it would work in our town. Kid tells parent, something strange happened. You know X kid? well they got into Y school because of crew. And they were recruited. That’s weird because they don’t do crew. Next day, parent calls friends and one is/knows a trustee or big donor. They also call friend A whose kids are really into crew and know everyone. Hey, do you know so and so? Did you hear they got recruited to USC for crew. Never heard of them. Wow, that’s strange. And so on. This would be fixed in a week. Especially in a sport like crew. Soccer, ok, tons of kids play soccer but crew and some other sports have very few kids at the top.
Not to even mention that these kids were likely to have spilled the beans amongst their friends.

To me this lawsuit feels unethical but more kids are joining in after one dropped out: https://www.stanforddaily.com/2019/03/14/seven-plaintiffs-named-in-amended-complaint-to-college-cheating-scandal/

A $500 billion lawsuit by one parent?

I fear that these lawsuits could tarnish the highly revered reputation of the legal profession.

@GnocchiB That was my first thought also. I am surprised that he did not possess the wisdom to know that in certain situations you can actually hurt your kid by trying to help your kid. Where did his kid go?

Yeah! Quinnipiac was one of my D’s top choices! Sheesh.

There are going to be a bucket-ton of lawsuits. I suspect a lot will be dismissed, but some won’t. There are some lawyers out there right now who are foaming at th mouth.

@happytimes2001, you have to realize how the athletic recruit scam worked. The coach told the admissions officers that the student was an excellent athlete. But unless the admissions officer somehow noticed next year that this supposed athlete they admitted wasn’t playing the sport, how would people know? Typically, admissions offices don’t announce why they admitted certain students.

The admissions officers believed the coaches at their school were not criminals. That’s defensible. They can’t check everything. A coach certifying that an athlete is good would be a priori more believable than a student saying on their application that they have some certain music award, after all. Students can lie on applications, but it takes effort to get the connivance of school officials.

This is heart breaking. This pathetic excuse for a father KNEW exactly what this would do to his daughter. He KNEW and he risked it anyway. Why? Why couldn’t he help her feel good about herself with her true score? Why couldn’t he just make a nice donation to a school that would have been glad to have her. This is damage that will never be undone. I hope, the courts leave this family enough money to pay her psychiatrist bills.

Yes, HES is the “commuter” version of Harvard. But tuition and fees for a full course load is about $14k per year, versus $50k for residential Harvard. Add housing and/or commuting costs to each… there is still a big cost difference to get the “Harvard residential college experience” along with the Harvard education.

“Agree, @Scipio . USD really surprised me. Just why? CSUFullerton wasn’t good enough? Admittedly, the campus is stunning at USD.”

Why? Because for the uber rich where money is NOT a factor, they prefer PRIVATES (USD) over the PUBLICS (CSUF)

As usual awesome Mr. Bruni - Bribes to Get Into Yale and Stanford? What Else Is New?

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/12/opinion/college-bribery-admissions.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share

The new plaintiffs appear to be not from Stanford. Now they are students from Tulane, Rutgers, and community college, plus their parents. Having Stanford students as the original plaintiffs did not make for a very sympathetic case.
