Feds uncover admissions test cheating plot

@sekere62 there are ways to fix it, the adcoms do their jobs, their supervisors make sure their adcoms are above board, the College Board needs to look at the statistics for schools that have a high rate of accommodation. Seriously the people that are part of the admissions process need to do their jobs, not turn a blind eye. Hopefully some prison terms will be a good deterrent for the future.

I would imagine that similarly to how admissions and financial aid often work independently of each other at many schools, admissions and athletics have boundaries on whose job is whose. Admissions checks into the academic stats while athletics would be responsible for the sports aspect of a candidate. Admissions would have trusted that athletics would have no reason to plead the case of a non athlete for a recruited position.

Also, a couple of people have commented that no celebrities have spoken out about the scandal. That’s not true. The very next morning I saw Kelly Ripa give a very empassioned statement on her show, and they usually avoid hot topics there. Rob Lowe tweeted (but then removed) something. Chrissy Teigen. One of the Real Housewives was on some talk show and commented. I saw another tweet earlier today… Richard Dreyfuss’ kid I think? Anyway he said something and his mom responded.

I would not second guess yourself. USC is a very fine school with a globally renowned reputation; within a few weeks or months, this scandal will blow over, and we will all be outraged and blowing up CC, about the next!

If a college is suspicious that a coach is scamming them by recommending “athletes” who aren’t actually athletes, or don’t have the athletic ability the coach says they have, it’s easy to find out.

The difficult part is realizing you can’t trust your coaches and have to check up on them. I can’t fault colleges for not doing it.

@mdphd92

I don’t think so…wrong person.
Gregory and Marcia Abbott: Their case is in the Southern District of New York. He is the founder of a packaging company for the food and beverage industry. Getting their daughter’s ACT questions corrected was $50,000 and getting someone to take her SAT was $75,000, according to the complaint. https://www.local10.com/news/crime/here-is-list-of-people-charged-in-college-admissions-bribery-scheme-

Indeed. Especially when the ad com person in question is on the lower end of the power totem pole, which is likely the case

@jonri Thanks, I stand corrected. It was too good to be true…

[Moderator, feel free to delete post #1615 and responses #1617 and #1620.]

Regarding the Huffman daughter’s alleged 400 point jump in PSAT to SAT; is it really that impossible to make such a leap over one year? What about over two years?

@houndmom wrote *“Probably a lot of Hollywood parents are in a panic right now!” *

Thought I’d post it again since the thread is moving so fast that posts are getting buried, but if true, there are indeed a lot of nervous parents out there waiting for the shoe to drop.

@CU123 RE # 1361 - that’s what I suggested yesterday in #881

As for the actual lawsuit - many of you know my D is a senior at Stanford, but she has not joined this class action suit at this time. Since the lawsuit claims

I disagree with the first part of this - we all know that the system is warped and and I think most people who got rejected would be using 20/20 hindsight.

But the not getting what we paid for - a fair admissions consideration - is what sticks with me. The implicated schools should be held accountable for the crimes of their employees.

The right thing for any of these implicated schools to do is to refund the application fees to all who applied and were rejected. Any further claims of emotional damage, etc. should be dismissed.

My son jumped from a 1220 to a 1470 from Sophomore PSAT to junior year SAT with minimal tutoring so I’d say it’s not impossible.

@MaterS That’s funny. Yeah, fabricate the photo as if your child actually does play the French horn!! Then take the photo to the corrupt college music director.
Director to admission dean: Yes, look at her posture and the long fingers. I see a great potential in her. She really has to be in our orchestra to further our school name!

@sportingclaymom I actually heard that. (That the bassoon players are sought after.)

It sounds like the world of “Mighty Wind”!

My D got an 1180 on the psat junior year. She decided to focus on the ACT. She got a 29 the first time taking it. She focused on studying the science section after getting a 23. Two months later she got a 33 composite as well as a 33 on the science section.

Lori Loughlin dropped from Hallmark, production halted on several projects

If he had been doing normal college admissions consulting for the parent/student, he would have been able to figure out whether they were aiming for an unrealistic reach college. Then he would have to judge whether they would be unethical enough to be receptive to doing something outside of the acceptable means.

@LisaNCState “its funny no one from Hollywood said anything so far - FOR or AGAINST! ( I believe)”

Some of these kids are models or actors (or wanna be) and may have been told that was why they were posing with athletic paraphernalia. If by chance something about a sport was mentioned to them almost a year later, they may not have made the connection.

@sekere62 My D goes to Barnard. She says the Columbia/Barnard campus is buzzing with this topic right now. She is hearing lots of “Hahaha, I wonder that’s how I got in!!” because lots of students are from super wealthy families!

I wondered when Lori Laughlin asked the judge to be allowed to travel to Canada for work projects, if she would have any projects left to work on. The judge said she had to surrender her passport in December 2019. Now that Hallmark dropped her from any of their projects, she may have no reason to travel. (I’m a big “When Calls the Heart” fan, and am dismayed by her behavior.)

Not surprised Sephora dropped the daughter’s line.

Was there a consensus on what should happen with the kids involved? Should they be expelled? Allowed to continue in school? (Apologies if this was already discussed - try as I might, I can’t keep up with this thread.)

Oh, forgot about another celeb who commented on the scandal. James Vanderbeek. I think he liked the invesigation code name.
