Feds uncover admissions test cheating plot

@PragmaticMom Agree. It is an honorable thing to do but it must be very tough, especially if the kids already have cultivated friendship/relationship and/or are heavily involved in the campus community. Sad.

@PragmaticMom The Laughlin girls withdrew from USC claiming they were being bullied by other students.

^^ that does not surprise me.

They wanted to party, but there is no one to party with now…

This is really sad. I wonder how many of these people have their own college bills to pay.

@twoinanddone The 36 year old was the test proctor and he changed the answers after tests were turned in.

Let’s not throw cast aspersions about someone’s kid without some facts to back it up.

As I noted upthread, Phil’s D was class Val, President, a two-sport star/captain, and with his money was able to participate in Egyptology research.

With a good test score, an ED to Brown has a decent shot.

(If the feds had anything on him, he definitely would have been named on Day 1.)

Singer’s thinking, stupidity, hubris, or what ever one wants to call it ,is truly mind boggling to me-

"The day of the indictment Mr. Singer seemed to believe his career as a college counselor could be restored. One of his competitors texted Mr. Singer on Tuesday to ask if he would like him to take over his client list since he had just been indicted. The two men had crossed paths in 2013 when Mr. Singer had taken a client from him. That client was named in the indictment on Tuesday.

According to a text reviewed by the Journal, Mr. Singer replied: “Thx. Nothing is changing for me. Time just needs to pass. Thank you for your offer.”’

He’s being indicted and thinks NOTHING WILL CHANGE? =))
guess he found out soon enough that that was not going to be true…

@TomSrOfBoston Story is moving so fast, it’s hard to keep up. Thanks for the update. The family publicist is not doing them any favors with the bullying angle. Would win more sympathy and perhaps even admiration if the girls claimed the high road of ‘we want to do the right thing.’

Do all of these colleges have honor codes? If someone cheats off a student without their knowledge or consent do both students face academic integrity charges? If they do then I think that any of these students or grads whose records have been falsified have to face the same consequences as any other kid who violates the honor code. I don’t see how ignorance could be an acceptable excuse unless every kid who’s accused of lying or cheating gets a buy just by claiming they didn’t know.

It’s seems like Ms Michelson was the classic average excellent student and HS athlete often discussed on CC and had a celebrity hook. No big deal.

If they didn’t cheat leave her out if it.

I know he made a lot of calls on her behalf but that is totally legal. The insider trading issue is not a reflection on the daughter.

Where is it published that Phil Mickelson’s daughter was valedictorian, 2 sport captain and did research on Egyptology?

Rumor has it Mr. Singer “picked and chose” whose conversations to tape, he was said to told some of his clients that he was wiretapped so that nothing discriminatory would be taped. If this rumor were true, it would be interesting to see whether the indicted parents were just small fish.

^^ since Mickelson’s DD was NOT one of the students involved in this tawdry, fraudulent episode, lets leave her
out of it.

I don’t have that info. I took @bluebayou at her word. No reason to make that info up and it seems totally plausible.

Bribery scandal puts college counselors on edge

"But the case has also put those who work in the murky world of private college counseling — where there are few rules, money can flow unfettered, and promises can be grand — on the defensive. "

But Phil Michelson seems to have some unsavory characters among his friends.

there are college counselors and then there are college counselors.
those who make “promises” are right to be worried.

For perspective – some of the indicted grownups (as well as their daughters) wear outfits that cost more than the $15,000 that the Huffmans paid Singer. A single designer handbag could cost that much. I’m familiar with the fashion business. There, a celebrity collaboration or co-branding partnership for $1M is not out of line. The Laughlin daughter’s Sephora agreement would have more than than covered the cost of the bribe. In the big scheme of things, this is not that much money for them. We call them fools. But we’re the fools, not them. They are amused that the proletariat are clutching pearls over $500,000.

“The murky world of college counselors.” Lol. Love the media.

Everything is a “harsh rebukes” and/or “dark clouds”.

Sorry. But a joke. Our college counselor was really upfront, smart and helpful. At building expectations, building a range of options, keeping deadlines and talking student off the ledge. Worth every penny to keep me out of it.
