My son is debating between these 2 schools. He is an Oregon resident and he got the WUE at Utah so the cost is comparable. He always assumed he would go to OSU as the engineering program there is strong, particularly for EE. However…he really loved the vibe of Utah when he visited - loves the outdoor, skiing, and proximity to the city. Utah’s engineering program seems good but smaller and maybe more in growth mode vs. OSU?
Curious if others debated between these two or had feedback on their EE programs.
I’d ask each for career outcomes including average salaries. You might ask how many firms attend the career fair too.
Utah shows this from 2022 but no salaries - but good overall placement. As SLC is booming, I’d assume ample opportunities locally but also further away for kids who apply to jobs further away. I know my son’s company has a facility in Ogden and they hire from the U but also a million other schools.
Utah has a tableau page from 2022 so a bit older. They show 13% continue to school and 82% work, 75% full time, 80% of which are in Utah at an average of $72.2K and Median of $71.1K.
I can’t find similar stats for Oregon State - but you should ask both for detailed career reports.
Yes, most of my D’s friends (not engineering) stayed, as did our friend’s S (business and CS). SLC is a great place for young people who like the outdoor lifestyle. The U has a lot of money for new buildings and campus is very impressive.
It is helpful to have a car as a student, so you can go skiing, climbing, hiking etc. Campus empties out at weekends outside of football season because many students are doing outdoor activities.
Oregon St has a very well regarded graduate EE program and is well represented in silicon valley. I do not see any reason the undergrad program would not be good as well.
