Some (most?) film programs don’t allow students to touch a camera til their Junior year. I understand the reasoning, but my son would like a film v production program that has him working on films immediately (in any capacity). Any programs with a solid reputation come to mind?
Universities with good need based aid preferred (4.0 uw, 1350 SAT, 31 ACT, EFC 0, TX resident)
BU, Syracuse, UT Austin, Univ of Miami - Any of these programs have film students working on films in 1st semester?
In case anyone is interested, Chapman students are handed a camera the first day (per program overview video).
FSU’s film production program is extremely hands-on. However, if accepted as a freshman, you don’t actually start in the major until your sophomore year. They have you knock out all of your other graduation requirements as a freshman. Then, as a sophomore, you follow their lock-step program of nothing but film classes for the next eight consecutive semesters (that includes two mandatory summer terms).
Thanks jrmutley.
Did your son get into film production at FSU?
@romns116 He did not get in on his freshman application last year. He is currently attending FSU as an exploratory major (that’s what they call undecided) and has recently reapplied to the film school. He will know sometime next month if he makes it to the interview stage.
If he doesn’t get in this time, his fall back option is FSU’s Digital Media Production major. That major is under their Communications school; and, it is also limited access. He is currently working on that application, as it is due toward the end of this month.
