Final Decisions, BACKGROUND, class of 2018

I can’t find it :(

Hmm. Maybe people will have to PM me with their real names and then I can send you an invite? it comes right up when I search but I created it so that is probably why.

SO happy for you daniellececilia! You did it! :D/

So, actually you need to PM me with your email and then I can invite you to join FB group! Sorry for the confusion.

I want to join, but I have to wait to see if D gets off the waitlist. Otherwise I guess I need to start a gap year group. :(

Daniellececilia, your post had me laugh (only one with a “lost my audition” and I know its for the best) …and teary eyed with the heartfelt Muhlenberg acceptance. Great school and they are oh so fortunate to have you! Congratulations!!!

@riptide96, I don’t think there is only one right path and the path that includes a gap year is an equally valuable and valid one. Why on earth would you not be able to be a part of the group still?

Yeah @riptide96 - You are a survivor either way!

@prodesse Thank you! And thank you so much for all of your help. Ithaca was such a hard school for her to turn down! She will have a few friends there, so she might end up visiting a time or two. :)

Regarding reauditioning for MT – yes, they give actors that option (at least the ones who auditioned MT), and Kaf told D her vocal scores were very competitive, but I don’t know if D will reaudition. She absolutely loves Barbara and Kaf and the acting classes she attended. She will try to get into the MT dance classes (she has that option to audition into those, too) and will likely take voice lessons, either from MT profs or VP profs. But she is a very serious actor and believes for herself that the acting training is the best thing she can do right now for her future, and that is what she will grow the most with in her time in college. So she’s really happy.

@sparkleshirley Can’t wait to meet your daughter at CMU in the fall. Still bummed we missed her by 20 minutes in the airport.

For those of you trying to join the FB group, please send me a PM with your email address. When I have your email, I send an invite to you through FB to your email.
If you just send a join request through FB I don’t know who you are because I only know your CC name. I have 2 requests pending right now and I can’t OK because I am not sure who they are.

One of them is me. At least I think. I will pm you my name.

My Son applied to all audition based BFA programs in straight acting: NYU, BU, CMU, Juilliard, DePaul, USC, UArts, Chapman (Early Action)

Prescreens: UArts (He was accepted two weeks after he submitted his prescreen without even having to audition in person. We had no idea that could happen, but it did wonders for decreasing the anxiety of this process.)

On-Campus Auditions: BU (He auditioned at the end of the summer as part of the BUSTI program), DePaul, Chapman

Unified in Chicago Auditions: NYU, CMU, Juilliard, USC,

Accepted to: UArts, Chapman, NYU, BU

Rejected from: CMU, Juilliard, USC, DePaul

Wait-listed at: None

Final Decision: NYU (Experimental Theater Wing)

Coach: Yes, he worked with a director he greatly respects. She helped him choose monologues and coached him about 3 or 4 times before the auditions.

Summer Programs: One summer at OCU, one summer at BUSTI (which he absolutely LOVED and which made his final decision between NYU and BU extremely difficult).

Congratulations!!

itsthejourney, Congratulations. Hey everyone, make sure you post your decisions on the “Final Decision 2018 by Member Name” Theater/Drama as well as here! The list is growing, but there are some missing!

@itsthejourney, if your son creates any of his own work in ETW, and needs a tall red head, have your people call my people. Yay!!! We NYU moms are apparently pretty bad ass and wear leather and cut people in CC off at the knees. Welcome to the club. (Which also actually includes puppies, ponies and rainbows but that messes with our image.)

Meanwhile am I allowed to say by loose extension that my non-theatre class of 2014 son picked Northeastern? I guess I just did. This was fun and seriously the 2014 parents and students both here and over in MT land I’m fairly sure were by far the most generous and fun in my 4 years of reading. Forces to be reckoned with nipping at many heels. You all GO! If I was cooler and southern, that would be “y’all go!”

Hermomma’s D

Applied to:
AUDITION BFA- Boston University, Emerson, Chapman, University of the Arts, Syracuse, Ithaca, NYU, University of Illinois

NON-AUDITION BA- University of Iowa, Muhlenberg, Skidmore, Tulane

Pre-Screen: Ithaca

Accepted to: Emerson, NYU, University of Illinois, University of Iowa, Muhlenberg, Tulane

Waitlist: THE WAIT LIST QUEEN!!! Chapman, Syracuse, Skidmore, BU

Rejected from: Ithaca, University of the Arts

Final Decision: NYU Tisch Experimental Theater Wing

Summer Program- Boston University Summer Theater Institute (BUSTI) after junior year

My D came home from attending the BU Summer program convinced that this was THE ONLY school for her and decided to apply Early Decision. In hindsight, that was a mistake. The stakes were too high, her nerves were too raw and she was too inexperienced in auditioning to have made her “most important” audition her first audition. I have also realized that there is really no advantage to applying ED when an audition is involved. Schools seem to take very few kids that early on- they want, understandably, to see the next 800-1000 kids before they give away too many slots. She also applied Early Action to Emerson. Initially, she was deferred from both schools and was devastated. Not a good way to begin….

Auditioned at BU, Emerson and Chapman on campus. She auditioned for NYU, IL, Syracuse and University of the Arts at Chicago Unifieds (Univ. of the Arts was her most DISLIKED audition experience!! It was during a huge snowstorm at Chicago Unifieds. Auditors barely looked up or greeted her, told her “You can start”, one auditor received a text and answered it 5 seconds into the audition!!! Literally did not give her the time of day! She said she couldn’t even take it personally because, “I didn’t even have time to suck before they stopped paying attention”! I think they worried about getting out of there as flights were being cancelled and it was the last day of Unifieds. We all have bad days. At least she could laugh about it!!)

She continued to keep in touch with BU- hoping that her deferral would turn into an acceptance. Instead- she was wait listed! It seemed in some ways to prolong the agony. She really thought this was “the one”- until she fell in love with NYU!! On our second visit there , after studio acceptances had been sent, she observed/participated in a class at the Experimental Theater Wing and that was it. She knew!!

She came home, released her name from the wait lists and sent in her deposit. No questioning, no doubts, just pure excitement (mixed with some nervousness, of course.) Her words: “Why would I ever turn this down?”

I found a lot of joy in this journey. I will be forever grateful for the one -on- one time that I was able to spend with her as we traveled together. The laugher, even the tears, the room-service, the delayed flights, the snow storms, etc. are memories that I wouldn’t trade for anything . We’ve all heard it a million times but it is now our truth- it does work out the way it was meant to.

NYU here she comes. She is ready…… me? Not quite yet.

One more thing and I know this is long- THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart to all the moms, dads, and students who have so generously shared their stories, opened up their hearts, given advice and taken the time to answer questions! You rock!!! Can’t wait to see where all of these talented and amazing kids go next!!!

@‌ Congratulations!! How exciting. My D (also NYU) Is SO ready to move to the big apple…I, on the other hand, am thinking of getting one of those tracker things they use in the Hunger Games injected into her arm so I know where she is at all times…

And that last day at Chicago Unifieds was a crazy scene. My D had Ithaca in the afternoon, which had been LOVELY during visits tours etc… but they were SO distracted. A school who had a room nearby just packed up and left- taped a paper to the door that said “auditions cancelled”. Parents waiting outside Ithaca ended up explaining to kids that they were out of luck…it was a hot mess

@toowonderful, sorry for your D’s experience but happy for her final decision! After doing this three times, I’m convinced a lot of the audition process is simply being in the right place at the right time. You can get distracted or grouchy/hungry auditors, or they can even lose any record of you (as happened to one student here)! This goes back to why you need to audition for a lot and to not have your heart set on one particular program going in.

toowonderful, NYC is huge but NYU is in a nice part of Manhatten. Your daughter should be very safe there although as a parent, I can totally relate with wanting a tracker device for my kid’s safety too :)
