one out of every five upcoming undergrad chooses business as their major, but i personally think that a large percentage of those choose it because they either not very clear on what they want to do (business sounds most appealing if you have no idea) or they just want to make money. i know that all that number crunching stereotype is false, but what part of their job do people in business careers consider enjoyable?

That depends, for me I consider formulating strategy and overseeing the day to day operations as fun, not something like Investment Banking (or Finance in general). However I'm probably going to choice Finance (if I can as an undergrad or) while getting my MBA just because I consider it a incredibly valuable asset to a company!

bump (10 char)

It is not fun....we do it for the moolah.

Not everyone does it for the money

The money definitely doesn't hurt, but I am actually really interested in securities, derivatives and FI, not to mention I love playing with numbers. May I get tired of it at some point if I always do the same job? Sure, but I don't think there are many people who would never tire from doing the same thing for many years. I'm sure if you have a strong resolution, you can do it even if you don't like it. But for some of us, I think it just happens to be that we can actually enjoy what we do and it makes it that much better (sans some long hours, but hey, nothing is perfect). BTW, I love the trading side of IB. Just my 2 cents.

jokes jokes and jokes...people need to stop taking everything seriously

I love to deal with people and put together deals. Then again I have always been weird because Glengarry Glen Ross is one of my favorite movies since I was about 15.

Classic movie. I loved that scene with Baldwin.

People only do it for the money.

If the job only payed a mean of $43,000 a year, no one would do it for the number of hours required. Money is the driving force.

usually no, but some people are into it. you also have people who enjoy consulting, general management, and entrepreneurship.

i agree with hallerbigballer.

if investment banking analysts fresh out college got paid less than 50k a year, i don't see many people doing it.

it's all about the money basically. you guys can say how much you want to make an impact and all that crap, but if you really wanted to make a difference in people's lives, you would've become a doctor or something.

show me the money.

^ This isn't purely about Investment Banking. The question is actually a bit broad and include "business".

So anyone who wants to make an impact should be a doctor, what a narrow mind. What about the politicians who want to change the world or the businessmen that provide jobs for thousands?

Maybe for you, but not for everyone. You possibly can't make broad generalisations speaking for everyone.

If Management Consulting only paid a mean of $43,000 a year, I still would do it!

Arguably even doctors probably do it for the money. So many pre-med students I know are doing it for the money.

It's just unfortunate that none of those people post on this board lol.

most, if not all students studying premed to become doctors that I know of are doing it just for the money.

^ quote for truth

I want to get into management consulting because it is something that interests me a great deal and I think I would enjoy it quite a lot. While it does pay well, that's not the reason I want to do it. On the other hand, I could never do IB or a finance job because I have no desire whatsoever even though they are paid well.

I'll do it pretty much just for the money, though I like the sit down idea of a job, and I like entering numbers on calculators (strange, I know). Especially when you turn on the print thing, because I add faster than it prints.

Actuarys make big bucks....that's one place where you have to actually like what you're doing to get into it. Too much math to not like it.
