So daughter is having a difficult time finding summer housing. She and a couple of roommates would like to find somewhere furnished. It seems UCI does not offer summer housing to non-students. She’s asking me for suggestions, and I have no experience in this area, so I am open to all suggestions on how to advise her. Irvine is an expensive area, they won’t have a car, but do have a generous housing allowance if they can find somewhere suitable. I’m beginning to think they may have to give up the idea of getting something already furnished.
Are there any fraternities that sublease for the summer? Kid in Boston had great luck with MIT and BU frat housing. It was cheaper than anything else and provided some community.
Also—sometimes students who leave for the summer lease out their apartments while they go on summer program, go home or do internships of their own. Possibly run some sort of ad or request with the housing dept or on campus paper?
try craiglist or
There is probably a Facebook group, too.
How do they manage in Irvine without a car? Bicycle?
I can’t imagine trying to spend the summer in Irvine without a car.
Yes, they are planning to use bicycles. I’m sure they could use Uber if they needed to. Thanks for the suggestions - I will pass them on to her. I’m trying to stay out of it as much as possible. I have never really used craigslist, when we looked at the sublet forum their wasn’t much, is there another part of craigslist she should be looking at? She needs something for mid-May, maybe more listings will show up.
She could also try sublet.com and VRBO. Orange County also has tons of fully furnished corporate housing.
Is this move for an internship? If so, maybe the company has some resources she could use.
I think Mid May might be the problem for a sublease. Most UC campuses are on the quarter system and classes will run till middle of June.
Yes, she did sign up with their corporate housing service, but the website said they do not guarantee to find a housing match for them. If that comes through it would be the easiest solution. I will suggest she check in with them again.
Thanks for that info, mom60.
Irvine has a beautiful transportation hub for Metrolink & Amtrak with connecting bus and shuttle service throughout Irvine if they want to expand their housing search. They provide secure lock areas for bicycles too. The station is in the heart of a tech company zone & feels very safe. They might want to contact a few property managers, some manage furnished houses that rent rooms out to individuals. If they have vacancies they might consider a short term rental.
Irvine is really big. Is she looking to be near UCI specifically?
Correct: spring quarter ends June 10.
UCI is only a couple of miles from where she will be working, so she was looking at that area to be fairly close.
She found an interesting place advertised on the uloop link bluebayou posted, but it is hard to tell if it is legit. She called the UCI housing office and the student who answered had never heard of it herself. There is very little info and no reviews available online. She’s going to have to lease something sight unseen and I don’t want her getting scammed.
@mamabear1234 I’m happy to lend a hand if I can. I work in Costa Mesa and I used to teach at UCI Extension, so I know the area pretty well.
When my D was looking for housing in SF she utilized air bnb, along with networking every contact she/we could think of. Are any of her group sorority or fraternity members? Reach out to corresponding chapters. FB page for local , as well as your and her FB page. My D ended up finding a sublet from a student doing a study abroad whose mother I knew from my hometown and hadn’t seen in 30? years, the dates weren’t exactly correlated to her need, so she an airbnb first, then moved to the sublet,
Costa Mesa - have you ever eaten at Pizza d’Oro?
@Madison85 I have not, but I’ll have to check it out!
Chapman University may have students looking to sublet for the summer, and their semester ends mid-May, as opposed to UCI, which is on the quarter system and ends in June. For Southern California, rents, transit, and safety are really favorable!
