You really need to watch the West Wing. 
They generally have hallway duty. They don’t try to restrict the kids from partying or report to their parents, but they do try to keep the kids from harm (roofie in the drink, alcohol poisoning, etc). What they are really watching for is kidnapping or assault situations. That is what they are there to deter.
Also, if it’s a first daughter, the ss agents are female. You don’t have scary guys in a suit in freshman girl dorms.

Agree with MOWC on Secret Service agents standing out. Joe Biden and his family spend Thanksgiving in the same place we have a vacation home. When he is in town and walking around you can’t miss the agents-- big, muscular guys with earphones looking around and pacing. If Biden or anyone in his group goes into a store or restaurant, they come in first and sweep the place. They travel in big black SUVs (Lincoln Navigators?) with dark windows. I was dropping my D at the airport on the Sunday after Thanksgiving and we watched the SUVs drive into the back of a huge military transport plane.
For two years while we lived abroad, it was a place where most upper class people had bodyguards for themselves and their children. We had a driver/bodyguard when we went out, but some of D2’s friends had 2-3 BG wherever they went. The BGs usually went in to a restaurant/club first (but not private homes), then they guarded the doors. I only had one incidence when someone asked me how many entrances we had to the apartment building and the apartment itself. At many restaurants and clubs you would see BGs hanging out. D2 told me that after a while she didn’t really notice her friends’ BGs, they seemed to just blend in. I was actually a lot more relaxed with D2 going out during those two years because I knew where she was most of the time.
I am sure first daughter’s agents would know how to blend in and not be that intrusive.
I think on security details some security intentionally wants to be noticed and some is more covert. Both serve their purpose. But, yeah, the average SS guy/gal is pretty obvious. My guess is we aren’t noticing ones that don’t want to be noticed.
I know for a fact that the Bush twins often had male agents guarding them and so did LBJ’s daughters.
Not in the dorms. Certainly elsewhere (at least for the Bush girls as I don’t know anyone who was friends with LBJ 's family ). But not in the dorms.
The ss were supposed to be bulky and conspicuous in some places, and discrete in others.
Women can enter/sweep bathrooms, check places guys can’t, blend in if needed.
I agree with @doschicos. I attended a political rally for a presidential candidate. The candidate was surrounded by SS who all looked the part, and there were agents in the crowd all in black suits, etc, too. But in various locations off to the side, looking like the rest of us in slacks and sweaters/sweatshirts were several others. You had to look very, very closely to see who had little earpieces in. I watched one of them be so unobtrusive that none of the people standing next to him even seemed to notice him. I later saw this guy telling a bunch of the suited agents what to do. I say unobtrusive in dress amd behavior, but the tell tail sign which makes them stand out if you’re interested in identifying them is that they’re the only attendees who almost never look at the candidate.
So where the hell is Malia going!!??
Maybe he’ll announce it at the correspondents dinner tonight.

Seems like Columbia (or Barnard) is much more likely than Oxy. But maybe some segment of our population is unaware that the President graduated from Columbia.
Someone just posted this in the Harvard forum. I hope it’s not true because I was hoping she’d pick a less “obvious” choice. Not that I give the Daily Mail much weight so who knows?
After tonight’s speech, we know FOR SURE she’s not going to Burning Man …
