Right, forgot that one.
Amy Carter started college at Brown. One of LBJ’s daughters (Lynda Bird) went to University of Texas
Ah, she must have transferred. Don’t remember that making headlines.
I wouldn’t think they would know unless the post cards/online boxes had been clicked, even so. Although maybe they do extra due diligence with the Secret Service on her final choice, so that info might leak if that is going on. I’d be more confident if the person was the outgoing president of Barnard.
But it has been rumored to be near the top of her list, so maybe it is right.
@intparent I recalled that she went to Brown to start, but did not realize til I jumped onto Wikipedia just now that Amy Carter apparently needed to leave it for academic reasons (ahem).
Is it just me, or wouldn’t going to Barnard make it super difficult to secure Malia? I guess what someone upthread said about a rural/suburban campus being easier to secure makes the job of the secret service easier. On the other hand, maybe it’s easier for the secret service to pretend to be fellow students/college employees in a large city.
Strictly going off the West Wing
, I don’t think they pretend to be anything but what they actually are.
^ accurate
Will she even get Secret Service after O leaves office in January?

According to this article, SS protection “cuts off” for children once their parent leaves office.
GWB extended the secret service protection for his daughters for an unspecified period of time.
I don’t have a single problem with paying for SS protection for any president of any political stripe and his (or her!) family, even if it’s for life. The personal risk they are under is more than we can fathom.
I have no idea where M will go,to school but I know that some of the SS detail does blend in. You wouldn’t know.
I wish y’all would quit posting until there’s actual news. I keep seeing a burst of activity and get my hopes up that we have a winner! :))
Even if the next president were enough of an asshat to not extend it, our current president is in office until mid January of next year (contrary to what some people seem to think), so at least the first semester Malia will have SS protection at college.
regarding SS protection post presidency - I recall reading that it is technically only for the past presidents, but GW Bush approved extended coverage for Chelsea Clinton and Obama extended it for the Bush girls and possibly for Mrs. Bush.
The article I posted upthread said that GWB extended it for his daughters. For what it’s worth.
I wonder if Chelsea Clinton is still protected.
@Pizzagirl - my bad! I didn’t read your link and must have recalled reading the original and errant press release.
I spent a lot of time around GWB SS while his Dad was president. They didn’t blend in at all. They wore dark suits and white shirts in the heat of Dallas summer while GWB was running at noon. They were really nice, though.
There was an act passed in the early 90’s that SS coverage for past presidents and their families would only be for 10 years. Then 9/11 happened and we were back to needing coverage for the president for life, and for their families as needed. The wives seem to have coverage and the children seem to ween off it as needed. I imagine the Obama girls will have it through college and until they establish their own lives.
I do not think Chelsea Clinton or the Bush girls still have it on a regular basis, but anyone can be assigned agents as needed. A neighbor was Secretary of the Army in 1973-75, and sometimes he had agents and other times he didn’t. It really depended on what he was doing.
This may be a dumb question, but… how exactly does SS work while girls (or boys) are in college dorms?? They stand out in the hall in their suits while half naked girls kids run back and forth to the showers? What about the inevitable drinking and parties? Must be quite a damper on the whole floor of the dorm.
Come to think of it…maybe I can hire them to guard my D??? Just kidding
