How common are essays that are centered around an applicant’s first-generation college student status? Are these the best way to go if applicants have this and similar hooks?

At first, I kind of thought it would be too generic, but I realized that the essay was the only way I can really tell about that part of myself. I’m an immigrant, first-gen, and my parents work factory jobs. Hopefully it’ll be good!

If it’s what you feel the most comfortable writing about and you feel like it will be really personal and reflective of who you are - then I say go for it. In the end what matters the most is that it’s well written and insightful, not just that no one else has ever written anything like it. Good luck!!! :)

Thanks!

Would an essay about my mom be too tacky or commonplace? x)

Most admissions officers say that the topic of your essay doesn’t matter as much as how it’s written- if you take a relatively commonplace but still good essay topic like your mother, as long as you use it to convey important aspects of yourself it shouldn’t be a problem :)
