First UCF medical school class may get free tuition, living expenses

Contributions from two prominent Orlando-area businesses are kick-starting a campaign to raise $6.4 million to provide free tuition and living expenses for the first class of 40 students at the University of Central Florida’s developing medical school, the school announced today.</p>

<p>Deborah German, dean of UCF’s College of Medicine, said the grants would allow the school to compete with already accredited medical schools in Florida and across the country for the best students.</p>

<p>UCF’s medical school is hoping to win provisional accreditation in the spring to keep on a timeline that would allow it to begin classes in fall 2009.</p>

<p>Stepping up as the first donors to the campaign are the Tavistock Group, a major developer, and Dean Mead, a business law group. Each will fund grants for one student, and Dean Mead will make additional contributions to endow a scholarship.</p>

<p>Tavistock Group is a major benefactor of the college, having donated the land in Lake Nona on which the college’s $68 million stand-alone building will be constructed, as well as $12.5 million toward construction costs.</p>

<p>The annual cost of attending UCF’s medical school for each student is estimated at $40,000. Of that figure, $20,000 is for tuition, with the rest for expenses such as rent.

<p>Any idea on how to apply? Anybody know the address? Anyone have info on their requirements? Also, need to know if anyone knows of a medical school that caters to PA’s / NP’s (mid levels) to reduce the four years down to 3 or 2?</p>

<p>You would use AMCAS, like all MD schools in the US. </p>

<p>Since they are new they wont have average numbers yet. Mostly they will want someone with 3.5/30. </p>

<p>No medical school does that. Medical school is a minimum of 4 years. You might have a PhD in Biochemistry, but you are still going to be taking biochemistry in your first year.</p>
