First Writing Requirement (FWR) & Latin Honors Ranking

I have an enquiry regarding the ENWR (First Writing Requirement) classes. It is stated on the CLAS website that students whose ID number ends with an even digit register for these classes in Fall 2009 while the rest should take in Spring 2010. As my student ID ends with an odd digit, so does that mean I’m strictly not allowed to register for my ENWR classes in Fall 2009, or is it more like a recommendation?

In addition, I would like to find out if UVa uses Latin Honors Ranking (e.g. Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, etc) based on our GPA? I had been browsing the UVa website, but I couldn’t find any information on that. Please do advise me on that if UVa does have such a ranking system.

p.s. I’m not referring to the Distinguished Majors Program (DMP) and the “distinction, high distinction, and highest distinction” that come along with it…

Thank you very much in advance!

There are 3,000+ students in your class, so you need to follow the directions about registering so that everyone who needs a space this fall can get it.

I’ve never heard of any of the latin honors for UVA, we just have the distinction…, etc rankings.

Kids,

For SEAS anyway, diplomas for SEAS graduates are inscribed with “distinction, high distinction, and highest distinction” based on GPAs of 3.4, 3.6, and 3.8, respectively. This has nothing to do with the DMP which presumably is a non-SEAS program. No Latin honors for SEAS and I imagine this is true for the University as a whole.

You can find a lot of academic-related info in the Undergraduate Record.

Looking at [School/College: - College of Arts and Sciences - University of Virginia - acalog ACMS™](<a href=“College of Arts and Sciences - University of Virginia - Acalog ACMS™”>College of Arts and Sciences - University of Virginia - Acalog ACMS™), I get the impression that unless you are in the DMP, CLAS graduates only get “distinction” honors and only if the GPA is 3.6. Nursing requires a 3.75 GPA.

Hey kids_jessy, I think that the ENWR thing is more of a recommendation, so you can always try to get into an ENWR class. What’s the worst that could happen? Go on SIS and try whenever you have access to it. I’ve tried a few different little tricks here and there, and if they don’t work, no harm trying.

It seems like at UVA, we don’t award Latin honors. In CLAS, if you are enrolled in a DMP program, and write a thesis, your diploma can be awarded with distinction, high distinction or highest distinction. If you’re enrolled in Politics Honors or the Philosophy DMP, then you can graduate with Honors, High Honors or Highest Honors. If you don’t do DMP but graduate with a 3.6 from CLAS, you graduate with distinction. I hope this helps.
