Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

After a few weeks away due busy times (work, visiting mom daily) and concern of sore heel… finally I got to run my 5k lake trail again. Time was almost 44min, about 5 min slower than my usual pace w/o mask. But I was thrilled to just get out and Do It.

MOWC - “Oiselle shorts” … which style do you like? I am considering new running shorts, and definitely I like pockets.

@colorado_mom

How was the heel?! Sounds like it didn’t give you any trouble?

Way to go @sushiritto VERY impressive!
@colorado_mom I’m on the Oiselle Volee team, so full disclosure. I like a bunch of the shorts. I like the pocket joggers (tight- like bike shorts with great pockets. These new ones are called Track Star shorts. https://www.oiselle.com/collections/shorts/products/track-star-shorts

ok, time for a urine check. (Those results are not for real people.) :naughty:

But seriously, that’s awesome. 'Grats.

@Midwest67 - Thanks for asking. The heel was fine. It seemed to get better when I walked with shoes in the house a few weeks ago. I actually did mail order to get new running shoes and wore them a lot in past few weeks. But today I used my old shoes due to yesterday’s rain. Happily my knee that had bothered me a little bit last month also seemed to benefit from the running respite.

Thank you everyone.

BTW, the 50th percentile for the Murph workout is about 50 minutes. So, finishing in 73 minutes is nothing to crow about. It’s actually terrible. Now, not everyone completes Murph outside in hot weather with the weight vest. It’s kinda like HS students self-selecting and taking their chosen SAT Subject tests. You’re competing against some pretty good athletes. Also, the average age of Crossfitter is late 20’s. That’s about the time in my life when I had my last apple fritter. :lol:

Oh, and I lost some critical seconds when I was stopped twice by cars, where the occupant/driver asked me if I was doing a Murph. :smiley: The other slight delay was when I stepped away (social distancing) to let an older gentleman do his rows on the short pull-up bar.

The workout really isn’t that difficult. The difficult part is how the body feels tomorrow.

I’m not sure how I made it through today’s workout. My legs were dead and sore when I got up. It was one of those runs where I counted down the minutes. I was happy I made it without quitting early. But then again, what was facing me when I finished? My video - week 5 LEGS! LOL I made it through well enough, but I’m not sure how.

Our hike yesterday wound up being an hour. Getting there, we had to take a detour, as the highway was washed out. They must have been hit worse than us - and BTW our river flooded AGAIN yesterday. That was unexpected. But on the detour, we saw a poor car dealership whose parking lot was one giant 15-20’ deep sinkhole. Eeks! Once we were in the park, we saw a few families, but it was definitely not crowded. Not even semi-crowded. We were completely by ourselves in the area where we ate. And then on the hike, we saw 2 guys leaving as we drove up. We passed 1 family on the hike. And another car pulled in as we left. The hike was cool. It had a few abandoned iron mines with historical plaques. I wouldn’t call it difficult, but there were also several LARGE trees across the trail that required climbing over or around. and one very short steep bank that was just red slick mud. That took us the longest trying to figure out how to get up it. But we made it, albeit a bit dirtier at the top. That was a MUCH needed trip. :slight_smile:

Glad you got to do the hike! Your area has really been hit hard with the rain and flooding!

4 miles this morning. I’m over 25% finished with my Race Across Tennessee. I’ll be happy when I get to Chattanooga. Cloudy and a little cooler today- but still humid.

Sunrise yoga, then 2 miles on the treadmill (RW streak - day 2).

Very busy (and annoying) WFH day, but I made myself take a break for a short strength video with weights.

I like both of those!

Several years ago, I bought a couple Smartwool short sleeve t-shirts and loved the cut/fit so much, I bought 3 more.

Of course (!!!) that style is no longer being made (boo!).

@Midwest67 , @sushiritto ,
Congrats to both of you!!! Well done.

Despite knowing how important strength training is, I don’t like it. But I’m reading Atomic Habits and trying to add it in so that I’ll be consistent with it. Ergo, when I turn the water on for the plants for 15 minutes in the morning, I do some kind of strength training–core, arms, legs, whatever. I’m 3/3, and even when the heat wave passes so I don’t need to water plants first thing in the morning, somehow a timer of only 15 minutes makes this sound do-able before heading out for a run. (I write this here to keep me accountable.) I hope to increase the time and figure out what the best way for me to do strength training is (we live in a townhouse with not a lot of space, so acquiring lots of stuff isn’t an option–I have a pull up bar in my bathroom doorway, but am trying to figure out weights vs TRX vs something else that is easily store-able but that if I left if out (trying to decrease friction which might limit my compliance) wouldn’t take over the house. If anyone has suggestions, feel free to chime in. (I know myself; I will sit on this and research it until it is dead and then ponder for a while longer…)

I (barely) made 1 hour (and 5 minutes) of fairly slow biking late this afternoon. I really wasn’t excited about doing it, but was happy when I was done.
I have done a few more stomach exercises and minimal stretching, but I made my minimal goal.

I saw on IG tonight that Valens Strength, a Barbell Gym in San Diego has decided to fold.

So sad! The couple had just started the build-out for a second location before the virus hit.

I am wishing them luck as they re-build their lives & make new dreams!

@Midwest67 That’s my fear about a lot of small gyms, like mine. I think my gym is OK financially based on the amount of equipment they’ve purchased this year, but survival will depend on the length of the S-I-P. I know my membership had expired this month and I’ve not received any communication.

As usual, after Memorial Day, the body ain’t feeling too spry today. I did a lot of pulling yesterday, so deadlifts weren’t the best strength programming idea today. I stayed lighter, did about 5-6 sets of lighter deadlifts, handstand push-ups, and GHD sit-ups.

The aerobic portion was 20 minutes/four 5-min intervals of rowing and the assault bike. Each interval had 30 seconds of rest.

@illneversaynever - I don’t enjoy strength training either. But I have gotten into a habit of doing it 2-3x/week. Like you I find that accountability is very helpful.

The humidity was 92% this morning, so I was not sure how far my run would last. To my surprise I went 5.68 miles. I really did not expect that. Some days it just happens.

My body was whipped this morning, so I backed down. I just walked around the neighborhood and did abs and my range and repair video (PT/stretching). And I took a good solid nap at lunch. We are now getting precrip from T.S. Bertha, so tomorrow will be another wet run. Really? Really? Next week looks better at least.

Not feeling it today!

Joints and connective tissue are a big ball of inflammation. I took a Rx anti-inflammatory & got the work done.

Rest day tomorrow. Yay!

4.4 miles this morning. Light mist then a little heavier and as soon as I got back in the house it was real rain. So- I mainly beat it. Will do a little walking later before a department video happy hour. Not sure how that will go. It’s not exactly the fun Christmas party at the boss’s house!

@MomofWildChild

Feeling any pressure re: what to wear & what to drink @ HH?

No- 4:30 is a little early for my personal happy hour, but maybe by 5 I’ll pour a glass of wine. I’m in a camo-print t-shirt and cutoffs, but no one will see the cutoffs. We aren’t a very formal group! It should be fun. We’ve had a couple of department “meetings”, but this is purely social. We really miss each other.
