Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

My sister used to do that when she was a SAHM mom mostly, also was the music person for her church. She is so so talented. She can play anything she can hear in her head. So she’d go and take requests from the residents and play whatever they wanted.

As a side note, she drove my mom crazy with her laziness. She would NEVER practice. Maybe an hour a week. And it didn’t matter. She began learning the last movement of the Tchaikovsky piano concerto 3 weeks before she had to play it with an orchestra. And played it flawlessly. I was so jealous!!!

What a nice idea to volunteer at assisted living, Colorado_mom!

When I used to visit my parents at various rehabs/temp nursing homes I felt the same - these folks could use some help & cheer! Glad your dad doing well.

This week I’ll hopefully begin “tapering” for the my upcoming meet. That’s the theory, “we’ll” see if I can actually execute a lighter workload in the gym.

A recent recap::

Friday, was 30 mins on the treadmill and then a 20-minute AMRAP of toes-2-bar, hang clean and jerks and rowing.

Saturday, was spent getting to a heavy single front squat and finishing with HIIT of thrusters and running.

Today, during halftime and part of the 3rd quarter of the Chiefs-Ravens game, I ran 6 miles around town.

Has anyone here hired a trainer for the gym? And maybe had tips on finding a good one?

Now that I’m lifting heavier (for me!) and delving into squats and use of bar on Smith machine and elsewhere - am thinking my form really needs a third party review. lol

Have watched tons of YouTube videos on different weight exercises + “best form for” but feel like I’m likely out of alignment, potentially damaging back, etc.

I know the employees at my LA Fitness won’t be a go-to source – even I can tell their clients have bad form (speeding through reps, trainer looks bored and not paying attention, etc.)

Thanks for any thoughts!

I used a trainer in my 30s. In retrospect, I didn’t ask enough of him.

Today, my fitness classes are led by a trainer, but it’s not one on one. Still, this person, who has a degree rather than just a certification, is great. Again, I take some of the responsibility for being young the first time and thinking it’s all the same and would be fine. I’d ask locally for recommendations.

I’d try and find a local “barbell” or “powerlifting” focused gym. The “certified” trainers there should be, in theory, better qualified than your typical Equinox, Planet Fitness, 24 Hour, etc. type gym.

Thanks, @Youdon_tsay and @sushiritto!

I will ask around - the ‘barbell section’ of my gym has a lot of experienced-looking folks regularly at 530 AM. I’ll see if one of them has a rec.

Gosh, I almost put this in the “brag” thread. Sixty degrees and sunny here today. Perfect day for the running trail. (Twas a nice thing since weather and travel has kept me from running since Jan 6th).

And the powerlifting meet is done. A very long day from 8 AM to 6 PM.

Squat :green_circle::green_circle::green_circle:
Bench :green_circle::green_circle::red_circle:
Deadlift :green_circle::green_circle::green_circle:

You get 3 attempts at each lift. I squatted to just below my PR. Failed on my last bench attempt, which was just below my PR. :rage: And tied my deadlift PR.

Amazingly enough, I got the same exact total weight as I did back in 2021, not that I was aiming at anything.

As a CrossFitter and runner, I don’t focus a lot on the bench, which is not considered a functionally fit lift. Who lies down on their back and pushes weight off their chest?

As is typical, very few 50+ year olds compete at these meets. So I won my age/weight group, but then I was the only person in the group. :grinning:

There were a 3-4 other older men competing, like me, but alas, I’m a welterweight/middleweight and those other older men were heavyweight and superheavy weight.

And now “we” shall get back to our regularly scheduled programming and beginning Murph prep. After a deload week, of course.

Great job! :clap: :clap: Betcha many of those wet behind ears kiddos are envious.

As a side note, my hard core runner friend used to say, “To qualify for Boston, you don’t need to get faster, you just need to get older.”

You did alot of preparing up to this meet. It will also be good to get back to “regular program schedule”! I’m sure you impressed those young’ens!

There were some huge teenage boys there. That’s for sure. But the competitors seemed mostly in their 20’s to 40’s.

One 60 year old competed just in bench, because he’s had a hip replacement and also broken his back.

My body aches everywhere this morning. If I can muster the energy and the rain stops, I’d like to go for a run.

What agre group do you compete in, if you don’t mind me asking? i always assumed most people in the cafe are late 50s to late 60s, but the reitrement thread has shown me there are early 50s to early 70s, at least.

I keep doing my thing. Did a fair amount of walking this week, along with some indoor biking and pickleball. I won’t play pickleball for 5 weeks now. We head to New Zealand for 28 days tomorrow. There will be lots of biking, with some hiking and kayaking thrown in for variety. I think we make 13 transitions (different hotels) over 28 days. It will be a little crazy but we are looking forward to it (especially once we actually get there).

You may not be playing pickleball but you will still be so active!

@1214mom Have a wonderful adventure!

I’ve been doing ok here, fitness-wise. I’ve been continuing to work with weights 3 times per week and I can see/feel a difference in my arms. Not sure about the rest of me.

H and I did a 10 mile “off road” bike ride yesterday. Just challenging enough that I had to work hard for most of the ride, but not challenging/technical enough that I had to fear taking a spill or needed to hop off to get around/over things. My kind of ride :smiley:

Somewhere in the middle. I’d like to keep at least some info private, sorry. However, I’ve been told on several occasions recently that I appear to be in my 40’s, after giving my true age.

Warning, brag time.

So, there’s a measure of how strong you are for powerlifters called the DOTS coefficient or score. It’s a ratio of a lifter’s body weight, age and the weight they’ve lifted. It’s used to measure who’s the strongest based on those factors.

I finished tied for 3rd for male competitors of which there were about 30.

Now, if there was a measure for how sore and stiff you are 2 days post competition, then I would certainly finish #1. :weary:

I’m still doing my own thing, but I did something I haven’t done in years - run on the treadmill. My running has been feeling pretty good lately - I’ve been averaging close to 40mpw - and I’d like to try to pick up the pace a couple of times a week. The treadmill was always my go to for tempo runs. The track was for speedwork, but I don’t see that happening anymore. I have been doing baby speedwork once/week. Just pick up the pace in intervals for 30 minutes.

Anyhow, today was humbling to say the least. I did run outside for 30 minutes first. I hate that the gym doesn’t open until 7. I feel like half the day is over by then, lol. And then I wound up averaging 7.5mph for 4 miles. I wish it wasn’t as hard as it felt, but it’s a start. My hamstrings were sore so I was also trying not to overdo it. I guess that’s not bad in the grand scheme of things, but it wasn’t that long ago my marathon pace was 8.3-8.5mph. I finished up with 30 more minutes on the bike, since Saturdays are technically my long run days, and did abs. I am looking forward to making this more of a habit.

Dang! I think that’s fast!!!

I have 5K and 10k route mapped out around my locale, which has one of those digital speed signs that light up for cars to stay at speed limit. I typically run by it at 7 or 8 mph.:grinning: (but that’s a 10K pace)

Last week was a recovery week. I spent the week doing small sets of lower weight and higher volume on my powerlifts and kept my oly lifts to about 60%.

And the HIIT’s weren’t everyday, I kinda went with a day on/day off strategy.

Enough lollygagging. I start a new shorter 6-week cycle this week. Also, the CF Open workouts begins 2/29, so there’s that to prepare for too. And I’ll be packing my weight vest starting this week, because Murph prep begins as well.
