@Jolynne_Smyth - This week I’ve been listening the the Outlive (Peter Attia) book you recommended. Helped pass the time during today’s walk. One metric he emphasized was Tricyceride/HDL ratio… best if under 2 (or ideally under 1). Once home I had to look up my numbers from January checkup. Yay, it was .68 (Tri 64, HDL 94).
I’ve never heard of this, but I am at 1.79.
My low number is driven by very high HDL. My PCP always says that’s a good thing, but recently I’ve seen articles that say otherwise. It’s hard to know.
Good for you, @Colorado_mom for diving into the science of Outlive!
I’ll be honest, I skimmed the science-tech parts. The take-aways I jumped on were: -exercise using heavier weights (progressive overload),
-work on balance and foot flexibility,
-eat lots of protein, and
-fit in some high-intensity cardio
…all with an eye to being active and functional in all the last decades of life.
I guess I figured that stuff couldn’t really hurt me. But - interesting to hear more about some of the more technical aspects!
Nice summary of your take-aways @Jolynne_Smyth. I’ve finally got to the exercise portion of Outlive… interesting stuff.
Yay… got out for a 3 mile run yesterday in 63/sunny weather.
Saturday was rainy and gross all day- I was on fields for our club’s coach education day (was a learner/helper for a bunch of sessions and the co-led one) from 10-5. I was soaked to the bone by the end. End of the day I has 13.5K in steps
Sunday I played soccer in the morning and then the wind picked up so the 90 minutes I spent on the field for another coach ed session was freezing cold. IMHO-- it was was more unpleasant than Saturday. Between coaching, playing and walked to/from dinner with my wife, I ended up with 21K of steps.
Last night was perfect soccer weather and I got in over 9K of steps
Oh gosh! Yes it was! Saturday was MISERABLE for rain. And then on Sunday, we drove up to your neck of the woods. And on the way, it was super windy and we passed by the kids’ old soccer fields and we talked about the good old days playing soccer in such winds… where you throw the ball and it comes back at you… Ugh - NOT good playing weather! And when we got out of the car at our hotel, it was freezing with the winds, and I just started cackling. OMG. It was SO cold after being so warm all week (minus the rain). I’m glad you survived!
Anybody familiar with InBody270 scans? In our city fitness center brochure I noticed the service (nonmembers $25, 5 scans for $100).
I haven’t heard of it, but our local JCC seems to be the only business with one. That would be awesome, if you didn’t have to have DEXA scan or a hydrostatic test in order to get those test results.
Just an update, last Monday, I repeated “24.2” (300m row, 10 deadlifts and jumping rope), 20-minute AMRAP, and slightly improved my score by getting midway through the 8th round (finished deadlifts, no jump rope). In my first attempt, I only completed 7 rounds.
Today, I attacked “24.3,” the last open workout. This was a workout right up my alley. Not to bore you with all the details of the workout, essentially 85 thrusters (increased barbell weight in 2nd round) and two types of pull-ups totaling 85 of those. One minute required rest.
There were 10 rounds with a maximum of 15 minutes to complete. And this one I kicked some derrière. All done in the allotted time. I look forward to doing this one again.
Otherwise, getting through my week’s workouts and getting my running in. Yesterday I did a treadmill 10K, since it was windy and I didn’t want to run in traffic.
Yesterday, we had a kid on a bike get hit going to school. So, I try to avoid running outside during commute hours.
Well, like for all but the kid getting hit.
Hope the kid is OK.
I’m staying busy since getting back from vacation. Mostly playing pickleball (we’ve had to play inside more often than we like, bc of weather - both wind and rain). I’ve walked or done the indoor bike other days. Today was my first outdoor ride of the season, about 24.5 miles.
Not that anyone here cares, but my Apple Watch gives many more calories for outdoor riding than in.
Thankfully, he’s OK. He went to the hospital just to be checked out I guess.
My Apple watch appears to have died
That’s not OK!
How old is it? Under warranty? Fixable?
Consider an investment in a new Apple watch to be your proactive “long term care” prevention policy.
OK, dh got it to charge on the third device we tried. Really slow, but at least it charged. I live to close my rings another day!
Yay. Not sure if Apple watch charges same way, but when I’ve worried about charging issues on my iphone (with worries about the phone and the cable), it ended up being lint inside the charging port. Supposedly you can blow it out or use tweezers, but I used the non-recommended method of using a bent paper clip.
Went for a great 3ish mile walk today with my wife, daughter and grandson. It was our 1st walk with him in the baby backpack. He had a blast. Walking with a 20 pound pack is definitely different.
Did you try and clean the contacts on it??? Is that the problem, charging???
