They grant old people like me (wink) extra time, so qualifying wouldn’t be the hurdle. More like would my body hold up to the training to achieve the time I want to achieve in my head? And even then… if I hit that, I’d still be in with the crowds. I always swore I wouldn’t go back unless I could run sub 3, because otherwise the course is just crowded, and that’s not fun for me. And super expensive. I just looked it up - it’s $230 just to enter. Then flight, hotels with jacked up prices… I’d easily be looking at $1500 and probably closer to $2000 for the weekend - just to run 26.2 miles in a big crowd…
@ClassicMom98 - Maybe you should try a half marathon. Ideally in your own location… or one where one of your CC pals lives, to come cheer you on.
Hard to believe that I’ve been running (at a pretty slow pace) for seven years now. Anniversary of my first/only 5k fun run this month. The race has changed charities, moved to early May… but still at my home lake trail. Was gonna sign up… but….
After 7 years with very few pains from running (except minor knee pain, mostly early on; also PF, but sis and I think we got walking on hard floors, old shoes), my Wednesday “non-impact” activities caused left shin pain on Thurs. After restful Thursday, mostly better on Friday. I assume the culprit was the long (for me) bike ride. But only 9 miles/flat, with a lunch stop in the middle. Small chance that my intense dandelion weeding was factor - some while sittin on ground, but a lot standing / leveraging my pry-tool. Gonna rest from running at least a few more days. Will probably start walking on Sunday.
So true. I’ve heard a few people (in decent shape) complain about hurting their back by doing something simple, like bending over to pick up a piece of paper.
Lots of soccer last week. The Tuesday combo of coaching and playing is definitely a challenge . The hard part is figuring out when/how much to eat-- need enough to recharge but not too much.
Saturday was awesome-- coached 2 games in morning, went to our local women’s soccer team’s game in the afternoon and went to dinner at our favorite beer garden. Ended the day with 20K o steps.
My second dance class was today. I still can’t follow all of the steps but I get most of them. The only way to get better is to keep going and develop muscle memory. It is fun, and I like the group of women there. We are talking about continuing during the summer.
On Wednesday, I drove to the lake trail and did my normal 5k run. Yay… no shin pain, after giving it week of rest from biking/running.
On Friday I decided to do my first “bike commute” of the year - ride to trail (only about 1.5 miles, flat), run 5k (plus a bit of walking on the 3.5 mile trail), then ride home. Happy bonus is that I noticed the flush toilets at the park are open. I rarely use them (or the outhouses along the way), but it is nice to know it’s available.
Back at my favorite park. They rerouted my trail since the fall! They took out the steps/boulders that made up the last 1/3-1/2 or so. But now it’s an extra mile round trip. I’m a little bummed but now I’m wondering if I couldn’t trail run it - uphill anyway. I’m not fond of downhill trail running.
And this was H’s first real hike on the new hip. He did great. It was actually his idea to go. The H of a very good friend/coworker died yesterday - another one from leukemia. He was diagnosed shortly after H though his obviously was a worse type. It sort of wigged H out I think.
That’s at the top and I would consider that to be pretty navigable. At least there’s some dirt. The other portion was all railroad tie steps and boulder steps. But now I think you could push a jogging stroller up it pretty easily. We were guessing it was to help with rescue efforts. I’m sure plenty of people do dumb things up there
I decided to sign up for the local fun run on May 11 at my local lake trail. I did same race (different name / fundraiser -formerly the “Mud Hen” race) on 4/29/2017 with daughter… LOL - that day was a wet spring blizzard with very muddy sloppy trail and 40 degrees cold/damp, my first and only organized run. The local walk/run class instructor held our gear and cheered us at the finish line. This time I hope for nicer weather and the opportunity to bike the 1.5 miles to the start of the race. Admittedly I had a “what have I done?” moment when I read the fine print to see there will be an 8am start (registration starts at 7am) .
I don’t know why, but the COMMITMENT to a race/run always made me nervous! I finally told myself that I didn’t have to do the organized stuff to be a runner. Of course, it’s fun to do now and again, but always the "what have I done!? " moment!
I feel the same way about avoiding race commitment / logistics. Only this low key event on the nearby, familiar venue appeals to me (though I skipped a few since the race reincarnation). I run this same lovely flat lake trail independently about 100x per year (sometimes clockwise, sometimes counterclockwise, sometimes when weather iffy some out/back short passes). This time it will be 600+ runners / walkers. Happily there will be plenty of people finishing after me, some with walking sticks, little kiddos, baby carriages, etc
