Just checking in
We’ve been doing a fair amount of riding on our new road bikes. We need to build up to doing some long-ish distances and hills before trip in October.
I’ve also been playing a lot of pickleball (3x a week for games plus a skills session I try to make each week).
Some days I do both pickleball and a bike ride.
I don’t get a lot of walking in (for exercise) because I don’t need to, but if I don’t do anything else then walking it is.
We head to Key West for a week on Sunday, and I suspect my main exercise will be walking there.
@FallGirl Yoga is hard! I used to always get sore afterwards, and knew not to schedule a hard or quality run the day after. It just wasn’t going to work well.
I’m also trying to get back into yoga. I’m trying to do at least 2x30 min sessions a week. It’s humbling to see how far one falls without regular practice. My body does not want to bend. I miss my yoga studio. (It closed after a flooding.)
A little tidbit that keeps cracking me up. I’m still listening to my German podcast while I run. Germans like to make LONG compound words, but they are so literal. wechsel => change. Jahre => years. Wechseljahre => menopause. Oh yes, it’s so fitting for me now. I’m comparing it now to how one’s body changes during pregnancy, except you don’t wind up with a happy baby at the end - just fat and wrinkles, with a side of aches and pains perhaps. But it is interesting as she talks about how women’s bodies respond to things differently during the “changing years.” Anyhow, Wechseljahre is my new favorite word, usually preceded by some colorful 4 letter word.
Just checking in-- lots of soccer of both kinds (coaching and playing) and other walking. Life is good
Great updates!
Got up to 290 lbs on calf press machine today (but still struggling to do one pull-up!!)
I’ll pop in tonight, because I hit a milestone.
I may be doing a 5K with DD in a few weeks and I thought I’ll wear my 20 lb weight vest for the race to: a) prep for Murph and b) “handicap” myself so it’ll be easier for us to keep pace together.
So, last Wednesday, I ran a treadmill 5K with the weight vest. I’m good to go.
Three years ago, in a competition, my ONE rep SQUAT max (1RM) was X.
Today, I hit a 5RM (5 rep max) at X, the same weight as my 1RM from 3 years ago. I call that very slow progress. But progress nonetheless. Here’s to being stronger as we get older!
I then did 60% of a Murph for prep as my HIIT.
Memorial Day is coming up and I know of at least one person doing Murph with me at the gym. I’m still trying to recruit more people. She’ll be great competition for me.
OMG, 20 lbs is a lot!!!
Good luck on the Murph’ing!
I just cracked the glass on my Apple watch
We’ve been doing Murph Prep Mondays at my gym for the last few weeks. What’s your favorite rep scheme for the pullups/pushups/ squats?
oh no, what happened?
I had taken off my watch in the bathroom, and it fell off the counter onto the tile floor.
Exact same thing happened to me, in the bathroom. It still worked and didn’t look terrible- not sure what i was thinking when I jumped into a lake wearing it w/that crack. I never take the new one off in bathroom.
I’m currently working on doing sets of 20/30/40, which was Sunday’s WOD. But I’ve done 10/20/30, 5/10/20 (last 5 rounds no squats, saves legs for run) and 5/10/15. And various combos.
For me, it boils down to how long can stay on the pull-up bar without going to complete failure with my arms and shoulders at the end. Everything else is easy peezy for me.
Last summer I did a Murph 12 out of 13 weeks, so I did a lot of experimentation.
We are in Key west this week. We have no gym at our resort, and biking would be pretty dangerous. Fortunately we have been walking miles every day. Today I spent a fair amount of time in the pool, “swimming” from side to side. (I told my husband I’d bet him 100 bucks that I got more exercise there than anyone else today, but he wouldn’t take the bet). If I’m short on calories for my watch at the end of the day I will credit myself some for swimming.
The pull-ups are my nemesis! I don’t kip well, so I’m not very efficient. Last year I finally finished Murph under an hour and did a 2-4-6 rep scheme.
This is why we are active. So that that on vacation, we have energy and can be active. Not just to close those rings or check that box.
But because it helps us stay young and age into an active lifestyle.
My husband likes to remind me that it’s not about the recording but about the doing.
Of course, what does he know?
Today I did the 5k fun run at the local lake. So much fun! (Happily not spring blizzard weather of the 2017 event I did, when held in late April). I had hoped to bike over the the local lake, but the low 40s temp discouraged me. So my husband did drop off / pickup
Last night 933 people were signed up, plus more day-of registration. Sooo many people, many just walking. Often had to pause getting around groups (cute “girls who run” clumps, with adult coaches.). The sunshine really warmed things up by the 8am start, so I had to do some rearragement of layers. Wore the event tshirt and stashed my hooded long sleeved layer in drawstring backpack. Windbreaker tied around the waist. Had I realized the sun would be so strong might have worn shorts.
Turns out the start/stop locations are more than 5k apart, at least according to the MapMyRun app I’ve been using on that trail for 7 years. So I stopped and got off trail when confused to see 5.12k. No biggie. My adjusted 5k time was under 40 min, yay! So it turns out my 2017 run/walk 46 min time was probably a bit more than a true 5k. (It’s an untimed event, but there is a clock at finish line). My sweetie had Mother’s Day roses in the car at pickup. I joked, “it’s not the Kentucky Derby”.
It was nice they had water at finish line (and about 2 miles in, though I had my own and didn’t stop). And chocolate milk.
Here a picture from my run this morning. Taken towards the end, as it’s now pretty light by 6am (boo!). Less than 1 mile from my house in the center of the city. I think it’s a fox. It moved more like a fox, but the colors looked more coyote like. It would have been a small one if that. I didn’t get closer to investigate as there are often reports of rabid foxes in our area. Or not often, more like once/year. But enough I wasn’t going to try to get a closeup shot.
H has also started training for his next endeavor after he retires. Crossing my fingers it works out. I think it’ll be great for him. But he will be away from 5:30-9:30 M-F for the next two months. Yesterday I did a 30 min yoga session while he was gone. I may try to do 30 min every evening. Nothing difficult. Just trying to get in the habit for at least a little while.
Congratulations on your race. That is a huge improvement from the last time! Well done!
Just had my first full body skin check done. Everything was very good. Sometimes being a vampire works in my favor. OK, genetics do too…
And that, my friends, concludes all of my pokes, prods, jabs, etc. for the time being. Everything has been done. All caught up. Blech!
Glad to hear you got checked out. I’ve had skin cancer at least twice, and I do it yearly. Growing up in California with fair skin when SPF 50+ wasn’t a thing did not work in my favor. Nor did being a “sun-worshipper” until my 30s.
