Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

Ah yes. Your shoes are motion control shoes for people with a lot of pronation - basically the opposite of the wave riders. No wonder they didn’t feel right!

Enjoy pickleball! The best exercise is the one you enjoy the most

I’m glad pickleball (PB) is working out for you.
I suggest you get shoes meant for playing PB (or tennis), and also that you always play with some kind of eye protection.

I had the best run I’ve had in awhile! I ran the middle 4 miles in 7:25 pace and the 7 total in 53 min and change. I felt a glimpse of the runner I once was… The weather here has been glorious. It hasn’t rained since Helene - probably not a good thing fire/vegetation wise, but I’ve been enjoying the sunshine… Highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s. My house stays in the mid to upper 60s without heat or AC. Trees are turning and might be closing in on peak.

Then 20 min on the bike and a lifting workout. Got my flu shot yesterday. No biggie there. Just being a responsible adult.

We all need those uplifting fitness days now and then to keep us going - great job! I think many of us are really enjoying some stellar weather this week.

@1214mom I’m just curious - what type of eyewear do people wear for pickleball? Sport goggles?

So I actually did get PB shoes this summer, after class was done and I decided to stick with it. At DSW they don’t have knowledgable sales people (although one did explain how court shoes were shelved in various places). So I brought the two most comfortable pair home, though none of them seemed to have as much arch as I’d like. Wore them around the house a bit and studied them with my husband. Ended up with a pair of FILA double bounce. If I ever get serious about playing, I might shop for another pair.

For PB, I’ve decided to always wear my sturdy plastic transition distance glasses/sunglasses that I purchased for running a few years ago. That way I don’t have to figure out “which glasses” to have with me. Also it means I always have the same correction, regardless of weather or inside/outside. Normally I wear different prescriptions for my “computer glasses” (compromise mono vision prescription) or stronger distance glasses and sunglasses when driving . But it seemed better for PB to always use same correction.

Those of us who wear glasses just use them. I almost always have my prescription sun glasses on. Others mostly use sport goggles you can get on Amazon for cheap. One woman had cataract surgery very recently and then she decided to wear some bigger goggles, but I didn’t ask her about them. I encourage anyone/everyone I play with to use eye protection.

Exercise has been crap lately–too much time hanging with grandson
But glad to report that I’m down 7 pounds from my peak weight about 4 weeks ago

I have a health related minor news item… Went to the eye doctor today. I had concerns about a detached retina - my sister now has one, and the doctor told older S he will be pre-disposed to having one? So I was paranoid about mine. The doctor did the full work up. I’m fine… But, he was showing me the pictures of my eyes and said “Usually in your 50s, you start to see some kinds of effects of high blood pressure or diabetes. I don’t see anything at all in yours. Yours look really good!” Woo hoo!

But i had to laugh… the (young) nurse/tech was asking questions in the beginning. “How do you feel about your eyesight?” Oh besides that getting older SUCKS?! It’s highly annoying with bifocals (monovision), but in general I have no major complaints…

That’s probably because the ophthalmologist only sees those who have problems. Nice to have a patient who’s good once in a while.

My husband has a retina bubble so he gets that checked once a year.

Can anyone recommend a good Zumba or dance “class” on Youtube? I’m looking for something for cardio and fun, when I can’t get outside. Thanks!

I had a TORN retina while pregnant with my first in 1988. It’s my last eye and I had laser. No further tears since!

Not sure if you’re looking for light and easy or more if a HIIT type workout .

For light and easy try Walk At Home videos - the older Leslie Sansone ones or the more up to date ones with the Pittsburgh team.

For more of a workout I like Grow With Jo videos. She’s young and I’m
Not but it’s a good workout. Look for a shorter one to start. I’ll post examples if you want.

Just checking in. Since we’ve been back from our big biking trip, we haven’t done much riding. But I have played pickleball 3-4 times a week, walked a fair amount (we have sons dog here for 2 weeks), and ridden some. The weather has been so beautiful here, but I think it’s getting ready to change.
We play pickleball even when it’s pretty cold out, but I admit I’m not looking forward to it getting that way. We do have a pretty convenient option that’s indoors, and costs less than 12 bucks for 2 hours. We use that when it’s REALLY cold, too windy, or rainy/wet.

This may be too old for you but better than the Walk Away the Pounds videos - she has different genres of music (50s 60s 70s 80s and 90s) and NO TALKING - YAY!!! If you don’t feel like doing what she’s doing, just keep moving anyway that fits your style. Some are longer than others but just the movement is what I need!

Well, the video didn’t connect, it’s for free on YouTube called “Improved Health”

Got out to do my usual 5k lake path run today. Had not run in over a week (though I did play some pickleball). It has been many months since I’ve run at 48 degrees, so had to refresh my memory about the proper clothing. As expected, my time was not great… but glad I was able to get out before the predicted snow tomorrow.

Deer are a pretty common sight on my runs, but this guy was so still and majestic, I thought he was a statue at first. And yes, this is our rich old money section, to which I don’t belong!

I finished our October walking (and running) challenge at work. We just had to complete 34 miles in at least 12 sessions to be eligible for the prizes. I wound up with 288 miles and was the highest. Second was around 150. Of course I didn’t win any of the drawing prizes. But that’s ok. It got me out walking more after work. I want to continue this. It’s much easier now that H works a few nights. He’ll join me sometimes. But it’s easier for us to blow it off when we are together.

Hi everyone. I had surgery last Friday and am recovering at home. My surgeon has specifically told me to walk and today I walked just under 3.5 miles (2 separate walks). I’m a bit sore (controlled by Motrin only), and tired but doing a little better every day.

My goal is to be back running in 2025.
