Flag Stone Porch Question

So, the front porch of the home we bought here in NJ had a badly decaying front porch and the Sellers were good enough to agree to contribute generously to the cost of replacing. We chose flag stone on the top surface of the porch and aren’t sure if we like it or not. Most of the stones are smooth and grayish bluish but one or two are an ick yellow and kind of rough in texture. The installer says they will smooth out in time. Does that sound right? He wants his payment but I’m thinking this might be one of those moments when we ask for some adjustment before paying. But I have no experience with stonework.

Off hand, the ick yellow stones sound like limestone, not flagstone.

Not sure if yellow is flagstone or not, but you should be happy with the porch as you will be living with it for a long time. It’s hard to picture not only the color contrast, but also the difference in texture. I’d see if it can be done to your liking. Good luck.

I’m getting our front stoop expanded into a porch of sorts and am using something called bluestone, I believe. No yellow tint.

I’ve done a number of walks/patios in various materials. My experience FWIW is that (with exception of split granite) patios look best when first completed. That doesn’t mean they age badly … just that they tend to get cracked, scuffed, weathered and uneven as they age. I’d suggest you get the offending stones changed now.

Yup. Thanks for the backup, guys. We’re going to request that they swap out the stones. Thanks!
