Flip #7 Mid Century Modern Mold

This Florida listing has some good mid-century design elements, lighting, etc.

Wow. That house ^^^^ is 99.9% designed for midcentury modern. There’s one old fashioned arm chair in Photos# 31 and 33, that I find amusng – it just doesn’t match everything else!! If one likes MCM, that’s the house for you.

Coralbrook - Over the weekend I was reading my copy of the latest issue (July/August) of This Old House magazine - and the cover article is entitled “Modern Living: Refreshing a midcentury house” along with one other article about a mid 50s kit house that certainly has a number of MCM attributes. Tons of great photos. Probably worth picking up…

Love the Sputnik lights and Flying Saucer pendants over the island.

The Sputnik stuff is very much back in style right now, and I’ve seen these lights and ceiling fans very similar to the swooshy one in pic 15 and the eight-bladed one over the covered patio in pic 43 in lighting stores right now.

Those lights are likely Modernica (noted as Herman Miller in the listing).

There was some trademark squabble between the two, not sure what came out of it, but Modernica lights are still sold, so I suppose it was settled.

Although similar in silhouette, the lights in the FL listing look very different to me than the one option I see in the modernica link. They lack the vertical ridges for one.

Not sure why they only show the non-ridged kind; maybe it was part of the settlement. But Modernica made the George Nelson lights which started the trademark fisticuffs.

A side note. Interesting article on flipping (NYT → ST).

Nothing Earth-shattering new. Had a good laugh about just two sides of a house painted. Lol.

I can’t say I love it. It’s okay to have a few pieces of furniture that reflect MCM, but having everything is overboard, imo. My taste though is quite eclectic and I prefer to have a mix of furniture styles, instead of a theme.

I find it totally soulless, actually.

I am just the opposite. I find it full of character and functionality. What I find soulless is dark stained clawfoot furniture, calico sofas, commercial grade kitchens in a house where no one does commercial cooking, and massive drapes.

Thanks so much for posting that house. I had no idea that mid century modern design was popular in Florida. That house is exactly what I’m aiming for!! The master bath is the same shape and size I’m building, including the walk in sloped shower with glass wall!! Love the tile choices. I’ve chosen the exact same kitchen cabinets. Love the cabinets they have in the 2nd smaller bathroom.

I personally don’t like the MCM furniture because it just kind of looks uncomfortable. But it’s popular here. Have no idea how we are going to stage this house. May have to ask a furniture store to bring stuff in?

I’ve actually come to really like the look of MCM furniture but agree that it isn’t always the most comfortable, at least not for my aging body and lower back issues.

@coralbrook, perhaps there is a dealer in MCM furniture in the area you could partner with? Might be a good way for that business to showcase some furniture given that you’ll certainly get MCM lovers looking at the house. Could be a win-win proposition for both of you.

One of the things I liked about that house was the price! Don’t know much about that area but the house sure seemed reasonable for the level of finish.

Note the polished concrete floors…hmmmm. Also, clean modern windows. Dang it, I’m stuck with those ugly grids!!!

Steer clear of concrete floors. Not the surface I would want under my feet anyway. The grids are very unfortunate.

Family members have concrete floors in their home. They love them. Easy maintenance especially with lots of kiddos.

Very hard on the backs… especially for those who like to walk barefoot.

It seems to me it would be like always walking in your garage.

I think we need a new thread on MCM!

My agent is Gaga over the concrete floors. Shes much younger than i am, doesn’t cook much and lives in a downtown condo. I’m not sure whether it appeals to a wide enough audience

I normally like windows with window panes, but in this house I really think you have got to remove them.
