Flip This House #5

Secret room? The kids will love that too.

We have an extra storage area with a door in the back of one of the kids bedrooms (hanging rods are on the right and left, door is straight ahead). e store all our luggage and all the kids old school projects and dishware boxes and such in there. Love that storage area!

It would be difficult to get to an access door for this storage. The access would be from back of the 6ft wide closet in middle bedroom. There will be rods in front of access. Someone would have to move clothes out to get to back of closet. Or leave area open but still have to move clothes out of the way. Only other option is a locking door in powder room to get access from other side. I think it might be strange. Guests would keep trying to figure out where the door goes.

I have an area that was built as an indoor ‘fort’ when the boys were young. Low, sloped ceilings (above garage), but carpeted, and has simple fake white bead board walls.

Access is through my son’s closet. To enter, I must move aside the laundry hamper, then the clothing on the hanging rod, and then duck as the opening is only a few feet tall.

I am very grateful for this space, especially when son returns from college with things that need to go somewhere for three months, and when I need to clear the clutter off the guest room bed before guests arrive!

Any room for a pocket door, @coralbrook ?

I cannot put a pocket door in because it would double the structural opening required in the staircase wall. Probably a no no. Would still have to push aside clothes and stuff to get the door open.

I don’t think this would be used for something that is needed often. I’m thinking something like Christmas decorations, you would only have to go in there a couple times a year. Pushing some clothes out of the way in that case is not a big deal.

I have a double closet like this and I love it. In my case, it is a coat closet that has a second door at the back, which leads to the under-stairs storage. There is a hanging rod in the first closet, and the second door would be obscured if the rod were filled with clothes, which is fine with me. It really does feel like hidden storage.

The extra storage is a luxury and I’m very happy to have it.

OK, ill try to squeeze in the under stairs storage. Kind of funky but we’ll call it 'character ’

I agree it’s worth trying. Everyone has those items they on,y need once a year…like holiday decorations. Or things they never need at all…like grandparents dishes. I so wish we had out the second door in our closet when we built.

Maybe a safe room?

It’s never too late!

I bought a beautiful home in La Mesa at a foreclosure auction in 2010. When we went through the house we found a built in safe hidden in the back of the kid’s clothes closet. I thought it was a great idea… not in the usual expected place. Lucky for me the foreclosing owner who lost their house was very nice and gave me codes and keys for everything (after we worked out a Cash for Keys agreement for them to vacate), otherwise I would’ve had to hire some bank robbers or something to crack the code.

is finally Pending in contract with the terrible kitchen design and horrid bath tile. He has been holding that property for over 12 months. Took only 2 months to do the remodel and now 10 months to try to sell it. Will be 13 months holding by the time escrow closes (if escrow closes)

Probably will sell for about $950,000 and he has been paying on about $900,000 private loans for 12 months. Purchased for $833,000 6/5/2015

Looked at the listing - wow, that first interior photo is all about the icky carpeting and sloping ceiling. And why didn’t they at least put a potted plant in the “back yard” so it didn’t look like an alley? Crazy.

I see no reason they cant go in the garage in a storage area down there.
you will have enough room, yes? and a dumbwaiter to boot? why try to carve out a hidden storage area in closet that is hard to get to when there is an easier, cheaper solution?? :-/
Its not like the buyers will have to go outside in the cold or battle the elements to retrieve grandmas linens at Xmas time.

I used to have a house with a coat closet that was under the stairs, it just went back as far as the stairs, there was no separating door. I was able to stash all my kids Christmas gifts in there without them knowing (they were little) and then on Christmas Eve drag them all out. It was my most favorite closet I have ever had and my house had plenty of storage in addition to that closet. In my opinion, just leave the back of the closet open. They can either love it or put in a wall themselves.

My mom has a second closet behind the first rack and loves it. But, not if you have to pay guys $500 to make it work.

I think I will just leave it open. The only cost will be extending flooring into area, drywall installation (it has to be special 5/8" fire rated drywall) and painting.

There is beyond tons of storage in this house. Main floor will have a laundry room with storage, landing area at top of garage stairs will have tons of cabinets and a broom closet, cabinetry in living room for tv and stereo equipment, full basement, an extra garage, an outdoor closet at the back porch/stairs off the bedroom, outdoor beach toy storage closet under the garage stairs (accessed from outside) and outdoor cabinets on upper deck. Oh, and there’s about 5’ high of attic storage available above the entire bedroom wing.

I think that the pro style range under the hood with a separate electric wall oven would be great. some people like to keep the electric oven for baking, and use the range oven for roasting, broiling, etc: anything that produces smoke. And it is really nice to have one big oven, at least.

Still mourning the pantry.
