Apparently our recent house purchase put us on the radar of some outfit called “RH”. They sell fancy furniture and give discounts if you are a “member”.
They sent me a catalog - 750 pages (!!!) of expensive couches and chairs and beds and furnishings and what-not.
What struck me the most (aside the the telephone-book sized catalog) is that there is virtually no color in the entire thing. Everything is shades of beige or grey or brown or metal. Even in pictures where a window is showing and you can see outside, they’ve washed out the sky to have no blue color at all, and muted the trees to a greyish-green.
Sample colors from an upholstery list: mist, taupe, nickel, carbon, fog, graphite, charcoal, twilight, black.
From a curtains list- white, natural, sand, flax, mocha, chocolate, spruce, fog, charcoal, indigo. You might think the spruce is green, but it has virtually no green tint to it. The indigo is almost black.
All of these are solid colors, no patterns or stripes or anything.
It seems that colors are OUT.
It’s the most depressing catalog I’ve ever seen.
NRE - we got the same ugly catalog about a week ago. Not a single piece I liked. What a waste of postage and paper.
Apparently, the role of furniture is to provide neutral background for colorful accessories.
If you go on their website and poke around, you can find a place to tell them to stop sending you the Manhattan phone book.
Funny, as I reading this, I am on hold with Restoration Hardware in town to see if they have one of the sale shower curtains in stock as they have a color and size I need. Online is not showing the extra long in the color I wanted,
I have a co-worker who LOVES Restoration Hardware, especially the RH Modern. Everything is VERY expensive. They have a new outlet about 20 minutes away. The furniture looks nice in person, but even with 30% off the outlet prices it is way too expensive.
Ah, RH = Restoration Hardware.
I did not make that connection.
“Apparently, the role of furniture is to provide neutral background for colorful accessories.”
I prefer my furniture to be neutral in color and without patterns with several colors. I bring color in with area rugs, pillows and artwork.
I work in a “high end” consignment store on the SF Peninsula and RH is the “hottest” label for Millennial’s and anyone else under the age of 50 looking for newish furniture.
If we get a stick of RH furniture in and run an ad, its sold by the next day.
Customers do exactly as emilybee does- bring color in with art and accessories.
Another Cape Cod flip.
Original, sold for $210K:

Flipped, less than 4 months later. Listed for $339K:

This one is interesting (beyond just the street name, who wouldn’t want to live on Bacon Farm Road??) because it’s a 1 bed-1bath house. What is the target market here?
The biggest dollar item is a new 4 bedroom septic system, which they are playing up as providing expansion possibilities. Interesting that the flipper didn’t try to do an expansion themselves and go for a bigger payday.
It seems wildly overpriced to me, though. Considering there is no garage, no waterfront, and it is not family-friendly at all, $330/square foot seems very high.
I think it’s adorable, and I think the changes that were made are very good ones. (Note the new layout in the kitchen – much, much better!) I have no idea what such a house should cost in that location.
“Walk to beach - 1 Mile away!”
Weekend place? Retirement home? Looked at Zillow in the neighborhood and it is pretty comparable for the neighborhood. It’s a smaller house, but the 1500 sq ft house next door is valued at 386k. Houses right behind it are in the mid-400s. Expand it and you still haven’t priced out of the neighborhood.
I think it is more than a mile.
It is kind of cute. I can’t tell what floor the bathroom is on though. So you either have to Archie Bunker it, or walk downstairs in the middle of the night when you gotta go.
I can’t find any comparables, there are pretty much no free standing 1 br houses, everything with 1 br is a condo. Everything in that size has 2-3 br and most have multiple baths.
It’ll be interesting to see what they get.
Cute and nice weekend place for someone from Boston. Not everyone can afford to be on the water!
I guess, but half the fun of having a place like this is having your friends/family come down and visit.
With 1 bedroom that becomes a challenge.
They could man-cave the basement maybe, but you can’t legally put a bedroom down there, there’s no egress.
I wonder if the flipper would have been better off adding a garage and putting a second br over top of it.
That’s 50% larger than this house. On a square ft basis that prices this house at $257K, and zillow has it as $217K.
Yes it’s been fixed up. That’s a pretty high premium though!
Some people don’t want weekend guests! Lot does look big enough to add an addition for another bedroom(s.)
I had to add egress window in my basement due to code to put bedroom in. Cost $5000. It’s the kind with steps outside leading to lawn.
Haha! I suppose that’s true.
There is a bulkhead in the basement to the outside, but it is over near the oil tank and the laundry/drain plumbing, so it might not be too practical to build a room there. It also looks like there is a dehumidifier in the basement, so that could be a problem too.
I think it looks clean and new but I notice 2 things that stand out to me.
Don’t like the placement of the refrigerator in kitchen. It looks odd by itself between 2 windows, although i t might close up the kitchen a bit if it was on the left run of counters. I would have put the stove in between the windows with a nice hood and refrigerator to left. As it is now, someone has to go through the whole kitchen to get something out of the refrigerator and we all know that the refrigerator is one of the most used items in a kitchen, people trying to get a beverage out of the refrigerator while Mom is in there trying to cook!
Next issue is that I see electric radiators in the main rooms which means no central heating. What kind of heating is in the kitchen and bathroom?
I’ve got an oil tank in my basement but it’s nowhere near the bedroom. My boiler and burner are also in the basement. We divided the basement in half lengthwise. One side has the rec room and the bedroom where the egress window is. The other half isn’t finished and is where the tank and furnace are. Total cost 13 years ago was $25k which included the window. One thing we didn’t put in, but can now if we wanted, was a bathroom. Just couldn’t afford the extra money at the time because we were replacing all the windows in the house, the siding, the roof and the driveway.
No one even goes down there anymore except H when he wants to watch football on a big TV and I’m hogging family room TV.
There is an oil tank in the basement. Those radiators are oil hot water. Exactly what I have in my house - except bathrooms which now have radiant heat. My kitchen opens up to my family room so has no heat registers in it at all. I do have an auxiliary heat vent with its own on/off button, built into the bottom of my island if I need more heat but I’ve rarely used it.
