Flip This House - My Own Home

I went with the white herringbone. I realized, after you guys mentioned it, that we have such hard water. Everything gets white calcium buildup so the dark floors would not look good after a while. Still trying to decode if I’m going to do some tile on the wall behind vanity. Or the blue could be the kitchen backsplash

Great choice for the shower floor!

PROGRESS
At the end of the day today we will have been working on the back studio apartment for 4 weeks. But, we are finally getting to the exciting stuff. The shower has been tiled and the tile guy is finishing the niche and shower floor today. And, our flooring arrived for the studio and it will get laid this week. At the end of the week we are going to install the patio sliding door and all the windows. Then it will be time to install the kitchen next week!

Here is my flooring choice for the studio apartment area. It is a 12mm high quality laminate in a nice neutral color. This color is one of my favorites, have installed it in several projects. It hides dirt like magic! And, even better, is I can get wholesale pricing for this flooring at about $1.90/sq ft.

I absolutely love this laminate!!

The laminate is gorgeous and perfect. It looks just like a regular white oak floor!

The laminate color looks perfect for your small space.

Ohh… fric frac double crap… spent time with the tile guy this morning to show him exactly how I wanted to lay the herringbone tile on shower floor… lengthwise so it would not fight too much with the staggered subway pattern. I just went back there again and he has laid it all the wrong direction in the one hour I was not in the back room!!! And now it is too late to change it because the wet thinset melts the web backing and the pieces would all fall off the web and have to be placed by hand (which never lines up straight). Dang it

And my full time painter, who was in the middle of scraping and prepping my exterior, called me last night to tell me that he broke his leg and cannot work for 6 weeks. I feel sorry for him because he will go 6 weeks without pay (unless he calls up state Short Term Disability or something) but now I have to scramble and find someone to replace him or we will never get done.

Aw, shoot. I am sorry to hear about these stressful events. Maybe the tile error will turn out to be a lucky mistake, looking better once everything is grouted. One can hope!

I love the high gloss of the subway tiles, and the flooring is great.

The subway tile is gorgeous. If I were living closer, I would offfer my help painting.

The tile itself looks nice, but I have to confess I am not a fan of having multiple sizes within the same shower. It makes it look like someone had some leftover tile they wanted to use up, which I suppose is exactly the case.

It will be interesting to see pictures of the herringbone floor, I feel like that is somewhat unusual for a shower floor. Hopefully it’s not too slippery.

The herringbone pieces are small enough that there is a lot of grout between them to make it non slip. They are similar to a 2x2 glossy with lots of grout

Loaded some more photos of the flooring and the shower. Shower getting grouted right now and the rest of bath floor will get laid down today

BUDGET UPDATE

I have ordered some more appliances, purchased all the tile and tile install materials. Purchased the flooring for studio, bath fixtures and the shower glass doors. The remaining large purchases are the kitchen cabinets and countertop. After that we just start installing!

DEMO / HAULING TRASH $2,300
STUDIO $4,500
KITCHEN, BATH LAUNDRY $12,400
OTHER $800

TOTAL SPENT $20,000

IMO, the “wrong way” herringbone looks fine.

Shhhh. Don’t tell anyone the herringbone is the wrong way. They will never know. It looks great. It also sort of diverts attention from the walls and the two different size subway tiles. It looks great.

I love the studio flooring choice!

I like the herringbone going that direction. It kind of leads you into the shower.

It sounds like you’re doing very well with the budget considering it’s such a significant improvement.

Hope the remodel is moving along smoothly…

SLOW PROGRESS
Now that we are one man down, things seem to be going slow. This week we only finished the following:

Grouted shower
Laid bathroom floor tile and grouted. Of course I was short 2 pieces so we still have to finish one corner later
Another coat of mud on the drywall, sanded, mud, sanded and primed entire bathroom and kitchen. This took 4 days and I’m still trying to figure out why it takes that long. Probably because only one guy can fit in there

Installed patio door and windows and finished all stucco patching and trim on the exterior.

Laid floor, stair tread

Next week we will finally get 2 coats of paint on the kitchen/bath and start installing the bathroom vanities and fixtures.
