Foods or Smells That Make You Gag!

Anything that lives in the water. Fish, shellfish, seaweed.

Scents – in candles, laundry detergent, air fresheners, dryer sheets, lotions, shampoos.

Lysol, Pinesol, etc. I had to forbid my cleaning lady from using those products; the smell hung around for days and days and I started thinking I had a brain tumor.

Add me on that one. FIL uses Persil (sp?). I have no idea why. It reeks. I do not understand how anyone can stand, much less like, that scent. When we went there the first time and had to sleep in sheets washed in it I was really tempted to sleep in the car and would have if it wouldn’t have been insulting. We tried re-rinsing them, but it had limited effect. The second time we at least brought our own pillows. If/when we go there in Sept we’re bringing our own laundry detergent (All Free) and sheets/towels will be done right away.

My D can’t go to the mall around Christmas time because she can’t stand the smell of those spiced nuts they sell.

H just made a sour cream dip. I retreated to another room.

Very few smells make me gag, but durian does smell terrible. I don’t like the taste either.

OTOH stinky tofu, hairy tofu, natto and other fermented Asian dishes I’ve found kind of grew on me after the initial shock. (Our guide in China finally figured out that we would rather eat the weird stuff than pizza.)

I don’t like blue cheeses. I don’t like beets, but I love borscht. I don’t like big slabs of beef liver, but I am fine with pates made out of liver.

One smell that really does make me gag - I won’t go to one of our local CVS’s because of it is the Febreze smell. Just no.

^I am with you on the durian. Lived in Asia for 7 years, never could get used to it. I actually liked to get up early on the weekends and walk to the local wet market to take in the sights, sounds and smells. Back then, live poultry, fish and other seafoods were available. My colleagues who came in from the home office didn’t all necessarily enjoy that experience. Always kind of annoyed me too when some of them wanted to eat at some US brand steakhouse for dinner or MickeyD’s for lunch.

I despise the smell of coffee. Especially the smell of coffee in a convenience store.

Okay, you can all hate me now, haha.

I remember when I was 20ish, I went to a Greek restaurant and had Moussaka with some friends, later that evening, I developed a violent migraine. I clearly recall screaming with the pain and bashing my head on the wall, it was just awful. While I never had another migraine, from that day (over forty years ago) I was never able to eat it or even see the word without bringing back those dreadful memories.
Then, a few weeks ago (40 years later), I had eggplants that needed to be eaten, so I made a Moussaka!

Canned tuna. I can’t stand the smell and I gag if I’m accidentally given tuna over chicken salad.
Milk- makes me gag ever since childhood as soon as it hits the back of my mouth. I’m fine with milk in other forms or cooked in dishes.
Salmon- makes me throw up.
I haven’t had liver since I was a kid but I’m sure I’d gag.

I do the dishes at home. I like peanut butter, but for some reason the smell of peanut butter being cleaned from a knife makes me gag. I just do it quickly and I’m okay.

My wife and one son hate the smell of sauerkraut. The other son and I love sauerkraut. We warn them, and then heat it up quickly.

Juicy Fruit gum. The smell and taste make me sick. It’s from my childhood when we would go on car trips and my dad would chew it. I was and am prone to motion sickness, so I associate that smell with feeling nauseated.

Also, there are many casual restaurants that use a very powerful cleaning solution. It is so overwhelming that I lose my appetite immediately and cannot stay in the cafe. Why would you use a product that smells like strong men’s cologne in a food place? Or any place for that matter.

Irish Spring soap. Yuck.

Use dull knives to spread the peanut butter and just lick the knife to remove most of the peanut butter before cleaning it. That way, you get to eat more peanut butter and don’t have as much smell from it while cleaning the knife.

^^^Same advice applies to maple syrup on your pancake/waffle plate. Ask me how I know.

Better yet, just lick the plate!
