For summer HW i have to complete a"reading journal" and be prepared for test etc. but one of the questions is what is the authors target audience for the books Portrait of the artist as a young man, Angela’s Ashes, Motorcycle diaries, and Down an Out in Paris and London. I know that each of these stories revolve around poverty but any suggestions helpful hints or answers will be greatly appreciated :)</p>
<p>Think about the purpose of the book in question, the grade level, the choice of words, the sentence length, and the tone. This will help you narrow down the author’s intentions. An audience could be teenagers. You could narrow it down to teenage Americans, or teenage Americans who do not know about the Holocaust, or teenage Americans with high aspirations, or elderly, educated Americans concerned with longevity, . . .</p>

<p>Also, think of the time period and its message. Are they speaking to educated adults? Think about sentence structure too.</p>
<p>To add to the above, you should think about the subject matter of the book/story and how the author reacts to the subject matter through the above mentioned (tone, diction, etc.). Also, look for the themes and motifs of the book.</p>
<p>Most books you read in high school were written for adults, especially pre-war literature. Keep that in mind. Audience is more of an indication of education level and interests. The audience for a novel usually would include people of an education level that fits the tone and someone who is interested in the main subjects of the novel.</p>
