For an international student, is SAT a ''Necessity''?

It is a common argument among the international students applying to US. The are variable opinions about this topic. First one being, ‘’ SAT should be necessary because it provides a standardized base for judgment, which in turn is the best possible solution for the huge variation in the educational system in the world. Furthermore, it shows the skills and ability of the student in English in a much comprehensive manner.‘’
Second one being, ‘’ SAT is a waste of time. English abilities can easily be demonstrated by TOEFL/IELTS/Any other standard test (Which includes Cambridge/A-levels/other Standardized examination). A person is not required to show so much comprehensiveness in English, except when he/she wants to major in English. Universities in Other countries (Almost all countries) don’t require any such standardized test! (This exclude the TOEFL/IELTS/Any other standard test, as they are necessary to understand English) And, many Universities in these countries are competitive enough for the Elite US Universities.‘’

Now, My opinion is, SAT should be there and it’s presence make a lot of sense to provide a common judgmental base. Further, there is no harm in learning a bit extra English!..But, there other factors (cons, that is) are also a puzzle to be considered. Your opinion?

it’s not about english
it’s about test taking skill

Most countries have a standardized college entrance exam and in the US it’s the SAT. It’s interesting though that US colleges are about the only ones that make foreign students take their own (the American) national exams. Universities in other countries accept credentials from the foreign students’ educational systems.

As Chinese, I don’t have to take SAT, but I did it to support my application.

Why don’t you have to take the SAT ? Did you apply to US colleges ?

The SAT is not administered in China, that’s why most universities don’t require Chinese students to take it. The ACT, however, is offered in China and a few colleges strongly recommend Chinese students to take at least the ACT (e.g. BC and Barnard).

He/She must be in PR China…Where SAT is not available, and so, most colleges ‘‘WAIVE’’ their SAT requirements…

dang thats lucky

Ummm, as far as I know, you normally have to take either the SAT or ACT, and if you are not a native speaker, must demonstrate proficiency on the TOEFL. I’m sure requirements vary, but why not take the tests?
