We don’t have any homes in my town anywhere near $1 million for sale. There are million dollar homes in surrounding towns and cities though. I found an interesting one in a nearby city for $1.5 million:

5 bedroom, 7 bath, 6000 sq. ft. on 120+ acres. Pool, Master retreat, Nanny’s quarters/apartment, gazebo, 3 car garage, several barns including a 3 stall horse barn, pond, banquet sized dining room, huge gourmet kitchen, fireplace. $1.1 Million listed price.

When i moved here when the real estate boom was in full swing, I sat down and cried after looking at homes right under a million. I was selling my 4 bedroom colonial with familyroom, nice kitchen and finished basement and 3/4 of an acre in a nice neighborhood for a quarter million in the midwest and praying we got that. It wasn’t even going to quite make the down payment on our house in the NY area. With our kids, we wanted a good public school, access to DH’s job that wasn’t too time consuming of a commute, and since this was supposed to be a “moving up” situation, I really wanted an upgrade from the house I was leaving, a house that I really loved. Our house was nearly paid off, and I had been dreaming of some upgrades as we were a bit cramped since DH used one bedroom as an office and we frequently had long term guests with my mother and his, as well as other family members. There was only the powder room downstairs, and the two bathrooms upstairs were not always enough for everyone in the our house at times.

And then we were looking at homes here and they were 2/3 s the size, with hardly any yard, split levels, ranches, TLC homes, homes with problems at $1 million. They did all have 4 BRs and 2 1/2 baths but lacked the basement, and the rooms were much smaller than ours. Oh, how I cried, and did not want to move here.

That’s about what a million will get you in what is considered a “good” school district in the NYC suburbs. Go into the the not so good ones, and you can get pretty much what I left in the midwest but without the yard.
