For fun..what kind of home can you buy for 1 million in different areas

OF…I can’t quite figure it out from the wide angle lens photos pictured with the Palo Alto link…The bedrooms don’t look that tiny, but obviously they must be.

God d… Stanford and Silicon Valley… :)

And people think California is going to collapse. Lol

BB, but don’t you think that property is overpriced for the area?
Being secretary for a Catholic charity must pay pretty good.

Check out the 3 Bedroom Apartment at this link. Three days ago there were two units for $6,260. Yesterday, there was only one left and the price went up to about $6,330. Today it went up to $6,400. You can buy these as condos too - I don’t know what they cost.

What? Boston thinks it is SF?

What is going on here? 6,000+ rent…

Geez…

Here are a couple of homes in my area. Both houses are within 1 hour of Chicago, local income tax is 3.4% and dropping and the property tax cap is 1-2% of house value.

I live on an island in the southeast. We have about 300 listings. Sixty of the listings are over 1,000,000. The price will get you about 5000 square feet in a nice neighborhood and a house that probably needs some updating. Or, you can get about 1/2 the square footage and be a block or so from the beach.

The most expensive house is $5.5 million and is really fabulous (and also owned by a famous golfer.) It’s a water front (not ocean) 10, 000 sq ft residence with 3,500 sq ft sf of stables.

We have a crazy expensive private neighborhood that is also a posh resort and it has it’s own zip code (but I can see the neighborhood from my backyard over the marsh). The lowest price there is $1.4 million which will get you a dated 3500 square foot home. There are 72 listings and the most expensive is $9.8 million.

Cpt–my D just bought a house in a town classically known for “Good Schools” with an easy NYC commute for just over 200k. Of course, that’s post-crash. And it comes with particulars that the average person looking for that profile would not consider doable at all.

But her kids, if she should have them, will go to school with kids living in multi-million dollar houses. (not sure that’s a good thing, but her choice.)

As far as my area–I bike by this absolutely gorgeous home, which is actually under 900K. It’s waterfront with fabulous views! (wish I had that kind of money!)

To me, “more house for the money” does not mean more square feet.I do not want a large house but I do want a beautiful house. For my lifestyle, I can’t imagine living in a space over 2000 square feet and in fact I really do not want anything over 1500 square feet.

I know that the mid century aesthetic in Palm Springs is not for everyone, but to my chagrin,I’ve come to realize that you pay 25% to 30% more for the big names. My background in art history is getting me into trouble.Richard Neutra,Donald Wexler, E. Stewart Williams, William Krisel, Albert Frey, and William Cody…ka-ching! Then again, you can more easily rent the house out to other mid century nut cases.

It’s kind of a hobby of mine on Sunday mornings to look at houses on the internet. I’m always a little surprised at the number of people who have homes in the $1 to $5 million dollar range who either don’t have the money or don’t have the inclination to buy some decent furniture and art or at least get an interior designer to help them out. I mean, they buy these incredible homes and look like they bought all their furniture from a garage sale.

I really don’t like two story rooms, either. It makes the furniture look like doll’s house furniture and it can’t be a warm, cozy environment. But those are pretty popular in the suburbs.

$1 million will buy a lot of house in Tampa Bay area. Attached waterfront house probably can purchased for under $1 million; it’s been on market for a couple of years. It sold for over $3.5 million in 2005.

Too, I’ve got a fixer-upper single wide trailer that can bought for $1 million…it’s within driving distance of Gulf of Mexico. At $1 million purchase price, I’ll let it go for only $1000 down and I’ll hold paper on balance for buyer!

[Lake Norman Waterfront Homes For Sale Real Estate on Lake NormanLake Norman Homes](<a href=“Lake Norman Waterfront Homes For Sale Real Estate on Lake Norman”>Lake Norman Waterfront Homes For Sale Real Estate on Lake Norman)

This is what you get where we live. A 1M house is on the low end for lakefront homes.

Garland, your link gets you to a real estate site.

Packmom, that is a low end lake house? That is very nice.

That Tampa house is not my style. Of course my style could stink. Lol Prices have taken a large hit in Tampa. Maybe these homes are good buys now? I don’t know.

Musicamusica, I don’t want a big place either. Under 2000 sq ft is good. Location is a big deal to me…

It is funny. You said something interesting to me. You mentioned an art background. You and I would look at the same thing and see two completely different things because our backgrounds and knowledge and experiences are different. That goes for everybody here. We all see the same things differently.

My family used to vacation in Sunriver Ore and I have great memories from there. Where I live now reminds me of Sunriver a little even though the areas are not really the same. I like that where I live reminds me of Sunriver. When friends come over and I say isn’t this place great? It reminds me of Sunriver. My friends eyes glaze over. They don’t have my Sunriver experience. They have something else. My friends point out things where they live and say isn’t it great? And my eyes glaze over. Lol

Makes life interesting. All these different perspectives, different choices. Those Palm Spring homes can be really great. Even that tiny Palo Alto house can be great if you want to live in Palo Alto. And a lot of people do.

7000 sq ft on a lake

musicamusica, I would KILL for one of those Palm Springs houses (didn’t love the second one as much). And it wouldn’t have to be a Neutra/Wexler/whatever. Also, I agree with you that more is not better. I live in a sub-1200-square-foot house (designed by a local architect in 1945, so very early MCM). It is plenty big enough for us, even with a Barbie-sized kitchen (and Barbie-sized appliances). The design is so clever that it seems spacious even with three people and two dogs. There is no “wasted” space (kind of the opposite of my last home, a gorgeous Arts & Crafts stucco house). Any other dream house for me would have to be equally space-efficient and beautifully designed.

$1 million in the actual borders of the District of Columbia will get you things like this:
[441 10Th St Ne, Washington, DC 20002 - Home For Sale and Real Estate Listing - realtor.com®](441 10th St NE, Washington, DC 20002 | realtor.com®) although I can’t say it’s in the greatest of neighborhoods. You can get a lot of condos for that price.

However, if you go within 20 miles of the District (into either VA or MD), you can get things like this:
[1036 N Stafford St, Arlington, VA 22201 - Home For Sale and Real Estate Listing - realtor.com®](1036 N Stafford St, Arlington, VA 22201 | realtor.com®)

Forget inland lakes in Michigan, a million will get you Great Lakes frontage or views or a lake with access to the great lakes.

But this is what I’m dreaming of, not to big, not to small and ski access:

^^^Pretty spectacular views in that house in Crested Butte, momofthreeboys. :)
