For fun..what kind of home can you buy for 1 million in different areas

Dstark, it goes to one house at the real estate site–at least when I click on it. I just tried it again, and it still did.

$888,888 6,000 sq ft. nice area, wake schools

there are 5 more homes between this one and the 1 million price point but some are not even built yet, they are to be on the member’s only golf course on the OTHER side of the tracks…

we however, live in a shoe…

Kat

I do appreciate the prices in northern CA, we moved from the bay area to NC 9 years ago!!! and so glad we did

Appealing to Chinese buyers with that price?

Garland, your link worked. I must have hit something by accident.

Great place. I can see why you like it.

This is why we don’t live in Potomac…

Tampa, Fl

$1,000,000 can get you a four bedroom, four or five bathroom house with about 4000 to 5000 square feet. The detailing in these houses are great!

And this is why S1 and DIL don’t think they’ll be staying in CA for the long term:

I have not been to Suunyvale for a long time. I have never thought of Sunnyvale as a place of million dollar homes

A million might not even get you an apartment in Manhattan: “If you look at overall market statistics, it can seem that condos cost as much as 40 percent more than co-ops: in the third quarter of 2012, the average price of a condo in Manhattan was $1.766 million, compared with $1.216 million for a co-op.”

From an article in the NY Times <a href=“Getting Started – Choosing Between a Co-op and a Condo - The New York Times”>Getting Started – Choosing Between a Co-op and a Condo - The New York Times;

I remember years ago–I think back in the 80s–when Bob Villa was still hosting This Old House, he aired a tour of the Trump Tower with Ivana, when she was still married to Donald.

Bob walks through one apartment and says to Ivana, “This must go for a million dollars.”

And Ivana responded, “Try a million per room.”

Those rooms must be pretty small.

Stuff with land (like a detached home) starts at 3 million.

Your wife is doing pretty well…

$1M will get you a 3-bedroom condo by ocean/intercoastal in SE Fl. Inland, 5 miles, really nice 5 bedroom homes on lakes or golf courses.

I look at the homes near Silicon Valley, and they would sell for under $200,000 around here. The worm is definitely going to be in for nasty shock.

dstark, yup! It has gotten that expensive. Six-figure down payments are not in my universe (or theirs).

CountingDown, amazing… And not necessarily in a good way.

In Atlanta, pretty much anything you want. Keep in mind that you can get really nice houses in most of these areas for far less than a million bucks. (We don’t do square footage in metro Atlanta as the result of some law suit forever ago.)

In one of Atlanta’s best school districts, with not a terrible commute to one of largest job centers… 6 bedrooms, 5+baths

And for the prestige seeking, the Buckhead address, with a good elementary school and improving middle and high 6 bedrooms, 4 baths

If you are lucky to be “awarded” (a broker used that word) the apartment, the down payment could be 50% or all cash. If you are financing, they want to see 2+ years housing payment in your liquidity accts.

Where I live really ugly McMansions.

Yes, CountingDown, those are ridiculous. If you are going to pay a million dollars for a house in California, it should at least LOOK like a California house and have a pool…not look like a suburban midwestern ranch. But apparently my dreams are not possible in that part of the state.

lastminutemom, those are really nice houses for the money (compared to elsewhere in the country)! Way too big for my taste but they are beautiful, especially the Buckhead one.

I only liked the Buckhead one. Better craftsmanship it seemed, and none of those two story rooms-those houses had so much white paint, and no sense of coziness, it would drive me nuts. But you’ll see a lot of that also in Texas.
