GetOuttaBuffalo-- there are lots of au pair agencies and websites. The one I use most is www.greataupair.com, where au pairs and families post their profiles and can browse through and find potential matches. I, as a prospective au pair, looked through families’ profiles, and when I found families that looked promising and met my requirements/preferences, I could add them to my “Hot List”; this sent a notice to their email address, giving a link to my profile. If they were interested, they could give me a “thumbs up”–or a “thumbs down” if I wasn’t what they were looking for. I also got notices from families who had found my profile on their own, and I could check them out and tell them whether or not I was interested. Sometimes families would just email me straight off and skip the Hot List/thumbs up process. Usually emails didn’t start until after a family and I decided we might be a good match. Then it’s just up to the family and the au pair. I communicated with a British family–who decided they needed someone who could stay for longer than I could–and a French family–who stopped emailing me, with no explanation–before the Spanish family and I decided we wanted to seal the deal. :)
