The first daughter is in the middle of the pressure-filled process of writing personal essays, asking for teacher recommendations and narrowing her choices.
Hard to feel too interested in her process given that her last name and her father’s job will get her into any school she desires; I’m sure she’s a good student, but there are many 2400s and valedictorians (which she may or may not be) who will not get into the Ivies and she will.
I’m betting she’ll end up at Stanford to get away from the east coast limelight like Chelsea did or Columbia bc she seems to like spending time in NYC; since Stanford is a bigger name than Columbia, I’m betting that’ll be the top choice.
In my opinion, she deserves every one of those acceptances. She’s had incredible experiences and should be able to add a lot to any college community. ( and I’m a Republican- or I was until now…)
I am sure she will have some nice options. She has had an incredible journey growing up in the White House and has definitely had some unique learning experiences.
The advantage she might have is that her application WILL get looked at - not just based upon grades. Which is perhaps the current flaw in very selective colleges - for the most part - you need to have scores/grades out the window to get looked at.
But success on a college campus - perhaps even more so for a selective college - is based on so much more. I suspect (from other things I"ve read) that Malia is a very good student at what must be a selective school in DC. And yes, her experiences, depth of outlook from experiences, and yep, she comes from a family of both parents who have succeeded in many ways - even before the Presidency - will bode her well.
I hope it’s a exciting, fun, and maybe a little nerve wracking process for her - just like any other successful high school senior!
I wonder if she applied ED anywhere?
I wonder whether there are any colleges that would discourage applications from (or even reject) students like Malia Obama because of the security issues.
Can you imagine the opportunities she’s been exposed to while listening to her parents with heads of state??? We don’t know her stats but you can bet she probably has fantastic stats, moreover, with daily access to tutors and political science just at her dining room table!
She would soon fit into Stanford!!! California will take her!
Seems like she should have a lot of great essay material.
Well one thing is for sure. Unlike most kids she doesn’t have to worry about the cost of college…
I hope she finds a wonderful fit like any other 17/18 year old. Mazel tov to her and I hope (yes, I realize this is a useless hope but it is a hope nonetheless) that the media butts out and lets her make this decision without broadcasting every visit, contact, etc that they can get their hands on. Let her be a young woman making a decision like any other young woman. (OF COURSE I know that she’s not just “any” young woman but I also know it wasn’t her choice to be thrown into the limelight and I hope the media respects that… admittedly, they’ve done a pretty good job thus far with the Obama girls.)
Good luck to her. She will be an asset to any educational community.
In the article it talks about how her parents have strayed away from visiting campuses with her to avoid more attention. They have relied/asked family friends, relatives to fill in.
My thought was that she would end up at Princeton, her mom’s alma mater.
Univ of Chicago, old neighborhood?
My initial thought was Princeton (her mom’s alma mater) or Columbia (her Dad’s), but I bet she will strike out on her own at one of the top rivals- Harvard or Yale. Security will be less of an issue with new elections- perfect timing for Obama’s girls.
How is that any different than for the offspring of Third World tinpot dictators?
I hope she has a great and normal college experience without a bunch of paparazzis following her and watching every step she makes. I am sure she will do just fine wherever she enrolls.
I don’t think Princeton was all roses for Michelle. I am better she will NOT end up there. I think NYU because I think she is interested in film, or one of the California schools.
Dartmouth and Cornell must feel slighted.
