I expect that the Secret Service will have some say in her decision. An urban campus would probably not make them very happy.
Post No. 16 is one of the most inappropriate, mean spirited statements that I have ever read on this board.
She will definitely have no issue getting into any university and she won’t have to worry about finances. I think any university will be very happy to have a student with her level of experience.
I am sure that some schools might rather avoid the security issues, but in the end, would you want to be known as the school that turned down the President’s kid? I suspect that will be the overriding consideration at all the schools to which she applies. However, I also suspect that in every way a school judges a candidate, she is qualified for any of them.
Plus, she’s a full pay applicant. Highly desirable these days.
The Secret Service will take care of security.
“I expect that the Secret Service will have some say in her decision. An urban campus would probably not make them very happy.”
They make it work. Harvard is urban, and they didn’t have any trouble protecting the Gore children.
I agree with oldmom. Security won’t be a problem. My Dd went to college with Barbara Bush while Bush was President. Security wasn’t an issue. They were present when they needed to be, but not really apparent to other students. The top schools are used to having big names on their campuses.
Best wishes for her. I’m sure she’ll do well wherever she wants to go.
My bet is Stanford.
I’m going to go with Stanford or Columbia.
It is hard for me to imagine that any college would not offer admission to Malia, assuming that her grades, scores and recommendations are solid, and that she doesn’t blow off the application. How many hooks does she have? (celebrity parents, development, legacy, URM, unusual ECs).
I am usually overly cautious and risk-averse when it comes to admissions, but I have to wonder if any school is a reach for her. She might be one of those few kids where Harvard and Stanford really are “safety” schools (again, assuming she has the stats). But if I were her parent, I wouldn’t want to say that to her – unless there is a better way to phrase “don’t worry, you’re getting in everywhere you apply.” If you were her parents/guidance counselors, what message would you tell her? Do we really think she’s experiencing the same stress as other seniors applying to selective colleges?
Well, I suspect that 95+% of other seniors don’t have huge numbers of the developed world waiting to see where you’re going to get accepted and where you’re going to get rejected… then what your final choice is! So maybe just a little more stress.
Nope- I think she’s experiencing much, MUCH more than the average senior applying to selective colleges. How many other seniors have reporters stalking their every college visit, knowing who is visiting with her, and writing columns about where she “should” or “shouldn’t” or “might” or “might not” go.

I think Presidents’ kids have success in college perhaps because of, and for sure, in spite of, being the children of Presidents. I wish them all well, and have been impressed with the Presidential kids’ careers in college and beyond in my lifetime. I’m a staunch Democrat, but I remember as a kid being enamored with the glamorous Tricia Nixon, admiring Amy Carter and Chelsea Clinton’s poise despite being mocked as kids, and I was impressed (in a good way) that the Bush twins were able to have what seemed like a ‘real’ college experience. Their antics made me smile because they seemed like spirited young women.
Best wishes to Malia. Leave her alone.
My money’s on Columbia or Yale.
She visited Brown last year, according to my son.
I really can’t think of any other presidents kids that I have seen so little of while their dad was president than the Obama kids. All pics and video seemed to have been allowed photo ops.
I will say, I have the impression that their mom is very strict and has very high standards. As a kid I don’t think I would have tested her, even in college.
I think she gets in everywhere she applies. I wish her luck navigating college as someone whose college career will be under the microscope both from the press and her mom! Finding true friends as a famous offspring, I believe, would be much more difficult than normal.
When was the last time a president had young children? I think it’s perfectly natural to want to keep the Obama children out of the spotlight, particularly given the potential for them to get bullied by anonymous people throughout the world (we talk about the effects of bullying here. Can you imagine what it would do to a 12 year old to not only have to listen to disparaging comments from other students but also from someone halfway across the world?)
To avoid playing politics, why doesn’t she apply ED to her top choice?
