Like any teen, she may not be completely sure what she wants yet. There’s nothing wrong with having options to compare.
For the people who think she will just get in anywhere regardless of qualification - I can’t imagine that she would skate into specific technical programs unless she really is qualified. Of course she can get into the general population at an Ivy or similar school, but I doubt she would be admitted to Cal Tech or Mudd of Olin or NEC or any other specialty program unless she has the qualifications . . . which she may.
There are thousands of kids who also could get into and succeed at an Ivy if their application could make it above all the noise. Of course hers will float to the top and get attention because of who she is but if there is anything to genetics at all I can’t imagine that she isn’t exceptionally bright and well spoken. I have no doubt that she has the chops to get in on her own merit.
I have to add that I LOVE that photo posted in the NYTimes photo in post #1 of her, her Dad and the crowd. Sweet.
Doesn’t sound like she is pursuing a specific technical program, saintfan, so thats a bit of a non-issue. She is bright, well educated and has a bit of a hook. She will do well in the applications cycle.
@ Whenhen I think it was beyond impressive that the Obamas were able to keep the girls so shielded from the media and entertainment paparazzi. Not sure how they accomplished it but congrats to them for doing so. I cant imagine growing up, going through puberty and the mistake prone adolescent years under a microscope.
My prediction is Stanford or Princeton.
I don’t think any president’s children have the same stress in regards to the admissions process to tippy top schools… I highly doubt that any univ rejects any of these kids unless they are truly not suitable…and I’m sure most/all of the recent-year Pres and VP kids have been suitable for any school since they are typically well-educated.
I think all schools welcome the idea that this First Child or that Second Child will be attending their school…they know that they’re going to get a LOT of free publicity.
Maybe she could move into Madonnas daughters freshman dorm room at U of M when she moves out
Someone way up this thread said something about all her advantages and it’s more impressive when the kid down the block gets into one of the tippy top schools (I’m too lazy to look for it). I was thinking about it and yes of course Malia has had an incredible number of advantages, but all this fame has a serious downside. Everything she has ever done as a teen she has done in the eye of the secret service. Do they sit in the front seat of the car if she’s making out in the back? How much security do all of the other students have to go through each day at school or when she attends a dance? Where is the secret service if she goes to a sleepover? Has she ever had the remotest chance of drinking at a party? She can’t visit a college without a press entourage ad the secret service. Parents won’t go with her to visit colleges because it would be too much for security to have to deal with. My DS got into a good school because of his passion for debate. Women on the volleyball team at his school got in for their volleyball skills. Each of them had the right package but this is how they got in over someone else who also had the right package. So Malia is famous and that’s going to get her to rise to the top. Ya gotta have a hook, and I think she has earned hers.
If I were she, I’d take a gap year and really take advantage of that last four months in the White House. And start college when the whole family is so much more relaxed!
I am betting on Harvard.
I’m betting NYU.
What do you suppose a safety school would be for her?
I’d say Tufts is a reach. You know, protecting their yield and all :))
I think the antidote to Tufts Syndrome is being a high profile kid.
It doesn’t matter where she goes. She’s the kid of a President so all sorts of doors in life will be open to her. The only actual questions are more like: will she do anything with those privileges?
Even though her parents know that she will be admitted to every college she applies to, I’d bet anything that Michelle is making her work those applications as hard as possible. She doesn’t seem like the kind of mom who would just allow her kids to glide in on their status.
Oh i’m sure all the Pres and VP kids of the past have turned in stellar apps and essays. They don’t want to appear like entitled brats…here’s my $100 fee and app, where’s my fat envelope?
I didn’t mean to imply that she might be persuing a technical program, only that if she did I would imagine that they would have some hard academic benchmarks that are less subjective than general arts and sciences.
I wonder if she would get waitisted at Washington University in St Louis 8-|
Do you think WUSTL, Univ of Chicago, etc. notice that their marketing mailers are going to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW?
