Don’t forget that Malia goes to an elite private school where she’ll get outstanding college counseling. Not only will she have Michelle making sure her apps are stellar, so will her college advisor.
Probably wherever she wants
Something light for a change. So, what school will the eldest Obama child eventually select? For the schools she is considering or has toured, see: http://gawker.com/malia-obamas-college-application-process-way-more-inter-1734579813
And what’s the under-over?
Yes, ok, I’ll concede that Malia is probably experiencing a different level and type of college application stress than your typical high-stats selective applicant.
Folks tell me, the Obamas have already been looking at real estate in Manhattan, thus it elevates Columbia to number 2, with Stanford being her number 1.
Really? In that situation, my kid would put Columbia last on the list – she wouldn’t want to live in the same city as her parents.
Since she’s twice had internships on film sets, that should be a clue. Putting in a plug for Brown, her uncle was the basketball coach there, and there is a well known “Brown Mafia” in Hollywood.
I vote for NYU since she is interested in film
I know the Obama’s have a pretty nice 529 set up for their kids. Their gift tax return is public and I used it as a model for my own
I’ll not bet on, but be pleasantly surprised, if she chooses a LAC.
Northwestern!
I’m guessing Yale - they seem to be the hot pick for snagging some of the “could go anywhere” kids.
^ Yale got one of last year’s hot picks, Dante De Blasio.
Are you sure? I thought they had trusts set up for their daughters, which used to be with Vanguard. They moved them to JPMorgan shortly after elected. This is off topic but the Obamas assets were around $2M in 2008. Last year it was estimated to be around $10M. That’s a mild increase comapred to the Clintons, a little under $1M at the beginning but they were worth a lot more when they left the White House.
What about UChicago? She may have fond memories of her years there, and her dad has ties to it.
I seriously doubt UChicago. She’'ll connect it to her young childhood when she attended Lab. Not her style, seems to me. Go west young woman (near HI).
What happens to her Secret Service protection as of inauguration day Jan 2017? I think it is only the President who will retains a small SS detail.
I hope she selects the college SHE wants to attend and has a wonderful experience.
Theoretically, it ceases. However, both Clinton and GWB issued directives before leaving office extending coverage for the kids in question. So, who knows what will happen.

^This. Chelsea Clinton attended graduate school with me - she started the same year I did and she was in the same track as my roommate, so she had classes with her. My roommate said she had Secret Service detail then - they were super obvious because of the earpieces they wore, apparently, and also the fact that they were obviously not paying attention or taking any notes. (Also, Bill Clinton spoke at our master’s graduation ceremony and while the rest of us were thrilled, I often wondered whether she felt kind of let down because it was her dad. LOL.)
Poking around on the Internet has revealed some people who went to Stanford with Chelsea and witnessed the SS situation; they said that the SS agents were pretty nice, and they got to know the ones who were around most often, but they were also pretty unobtrusive and didn’t get in the way. One person said they used to borrow movies from them, because they had a vast library of videos to keep them from dying of boredom. LOL. Apparently some of her dorm-mates also asked the agents if they would do a session on the Secret Service career path, which they did!
I don’t know if @GMTplus7 is aware that post #16 sounds just awful. But they should know. Thanks @LakeWashington for calling this out.
