I have heard that her parents are also strongly considering moving to NY after the White House as well. Although maybe only after Sasha gets out of high school (and Sasha looked so grown up in a photo of them on their annual bookstore outing last week!).
Thanks for correcting that, Cardinal Fang.
John McCain told a “joke” about her at some event that went, “Do you know why Chelsea Clinton is so ugly? Because Janet Reno is her father.”
My bet is her stats are fine.
But if not…she does have a huge hook which no other applicant this year will have ![]()
Oh, I have been assuming her stats are fine. But just as with any other applicant, we don’t actually know that. We can confirm the hook, though!
The academic expectations are the same at Barnard & Columbia --many Barnard alums, including my daughter, felt that Barnard courses were more demanding, though it might depend on major.
Malia has also visited Yale & Brown, so I don’t think her test scores/GPA are a barrier. Anyway, I think that her hook gets her in pretty much anywhere.
Will she apply to Bama? Nah.
Not to poke what may be a sore spot with Barnard supporters, but Columbia has significantly higher SAT ranges than Barnard. Agree her hook may trump all other aspects if her scores are at all reasonable, and I am sure they are
You have to assume she’s looking at schools that match her stats, so since she’s looking at Brown and Yale, she has Brown and Yale stats.
I don’t think the Obama kids are any more sheltered than previous president’s kids. The media knows that they have to follow the publicity rules and if they don’t, they’ll lose access to more than just the press conferences. Didn’t you watch West Wing? That C.J Cregg could shut down any news organization that didn’t follow the rules.
You really don’t hear that much about Barbara Bush (the twin, not the grandmother), but much more about Jenna who chose a public life. I’ve always felt Chelsea Clinton was unfair as long after she became an adult, campaigned for her mother, gave political speeches, she still claim her ‘no press questions or interviews’ status they gave her as a child/student. It’s fine if the children don’t want to be in the public, but then stay private and don’t campaign.
Obama said a couple of years ago that they’d stay in DC until Sasha graduated from high school. I actually think they’ll stay in DC for consistency in Sasha’s life. It’s already going to be hard to adjust to not living in the White House, not living under very tight security without also having to adjust to a new school and new friends. I’m not a big Obama (as president) fan, but I do think they put the girls first and are great parents.
This is the biggest celebrity college search since Emma Watson found her way to Brown.
My comment before was in reference to your statement that Columbia could be a reach “in the classroom”
Standardized scores have very little to do with classroom environment.
Barnard places greater emphasis on high school GPA & other factors than SAT. But the Barnard students end up taking the same classes as CC students and GS student. GS test scores are not reported.
Maybe she’ll apply to UDCCC (University of District of Columbia Community College):

Harvard.
Gap year than Harvard.
Good on her, she seems like a nice young lady, and like I tell my own daughter, carpe diem the world is her oyster! (well in my daughter’s case, maybe her enchilada, oysters are a bit spendy ;))
*then
That young woman won’t learn a dadgum thing at Harvard and it won’t be her fault. :>
Here’s an article that mentions some of the very issues brought up in this thread. And in the three comments after the article (well, there are three now… feel free to skip the snarky first two comments), the third comment shares a link to CC!

Sidwell Friends School is one of the best private schools in the country. While the school will not disclose any details of her attendance (as it shouldn’t), her classmates say she is extremely bright, and has taken very challenging courses. I imagine she has done very well on her SATs as most students at the school do.
In any event, most of these comments are simply nasty. It’s no one’s business where she goes and I salute her parents for refusing to discuss the matter.
@Scipio Emma Watson was a brilliant student. She had a string of A’s on her A-Levels and was also accepted by Trinity College Cambridge, one of the most prestigious colleges at Cambridge University.
Yes, but Emma Watson was able to attend more classes because she had a Time Turner. /jk
